View Full Version : Help with 306CI Crate Engine Accessory drive
Hi guys, I am looking for the alternator and bracket and tensioner and water pump pulley for the Ford 306ci crate engine (complete accessory drive). The ones that came off of my 87 donor do not line up with the crank pulley on the new crate 306, any help is appreciated.
I'm at the point where I'm contemplating cleaning up the donor motor and just selling the 306ci crate .............. I don't want to do that but good grief, this process can be frustrating!!!
CL was NO help and e-bay searches are inconclusive. The recycling centers (new age junk yards) around me do not have anything older than 2000. The FPRR techs said I needed the accessory drive from a 96 V8 Ford Explorer. Thanks in advance

Can you post some pictures of the front of your engine? If you have a 87-93 timing cover then finding parts is easy. If its later you will most likely need the Explorer parts. I have a drive kit on my web site at www.replicaparts.com. It does require the 87-93 timing cover though. As for the balancer, it can be spaced out. Fortes sells the spacer.

I've used pulleys and brackets from CFR Performance on a few cars, a couple of them with the Ford Racing 306. Fit well, work well, reasonably priced. Check their website for complete pulley & bracket sets or buy them piece by piece depending on your needs.

If its a new Ford crate engine, then you would use the parts for a 89-93 mustang.

You shouldn't get too frustrated about this process. I had never worked on a ford engine for myself until this first 302 for the roadster. There are some "ford" idiosyncrasies that you have to get used to when modifying the setup. You can order parts on line from a salvage yard. We have one here in the PHX area that will ship locally if you don't feel like driving across town. I like the cfr performance link but summit also sells similar stuff. You are in the fox body mustang engine era. There are not as many after market parts as for small block chevys but there are enough out there to serve your needs. The price range can be under a hundred to over a thousand!
Good luck,
WEK.
Thank you all very much for your responses and your encouragement!!!

I have the 94-95 timing cover on my MKIV and used the Breeze Alternator mounting kit. Worked great, but not sure if it would work with the setup you intend. I am running Crank, Water Pump, and Alternator only.

I read somewhere how many different combinations of front accessory drives Ford used over the years with the SBF. I don't remember the number but it's a lot. Different timing covers, long and short nose water pumps, clockwise and counter-clockwise water pumps, V-belt and serpentine, the list goes on and on. Then we complicate by adding or taking away from the OEM configurations. You aren't the first to be frustrated by this. Certainly don't give up and change engine plans over it! Take it a step at a time. I haven't personally used CFR, but I've heard many good things about them. I've used March products on both of my builds. Nice enough, but certainly not cheap. They do have a lot of choices though. Too many maybe. Both of my builds included exchanging and sending parts back a couple of times before it was sorted out. For my Mk4, I especially struggled to get the alternator lined up properly. But found the right parts and it all worked out. Don't be surprised if a spacer or two is required to fine tune any of the drives. It can be done!

One call t March Engineering does it all, why complicate things?
Once you have P/N, order through Summit, at your door 3-4 days, shipping free, fits like a glove.
