Coyote/TKO midshift without buying a midshifter?

I have done the math and after getting measurements from a couple of other builders I am going with a midshift ball location without buying a midshifter.

Builder #1: 347/Quicktime/TKO500/Fortes Midshifter/Fortes 2.5" dogleg foward stick puts the shifter ball 10.5" from the vertical firewall at the front of the trans tunnel.

Builder #2: Coyote/Quicktime/TKO600/Fortes Midshifter/Fortes straight stick puts the shifter ball 10" from the vertical firewall at the front of the trans tunnel.

I am doing a Coyote/Quicktime/TKO600 and if I use the stock shifter and reverse it (supported by Tremec) and a 2.5" dogleg stick I wind up with the shifter ball at 11.5" from the vertical firewall at the front of the trans tunnel. I am 1" further back than the 347 setup with a midshifter and dogleg stick. After talking with that builder he thinks it will be fine (5th is a little bit of a reach for him anyway). I will have to cut the transmission tunnel brace and re-weld it to clear the shifter position but that's easy.

We shall see... The Fortes 2.5" dogleg stick is still only 5" tall.

BTW - this should free up space for cupholders in front of the shifter vs having to be behind it as well. Another thing I like about this approach.

Does anyone have any idea what the distance would be from the vertical firewall to the gear shift if the combo was Coyote and TR-3650 from an 04 mustang?

I did the math by adding in the bellhousing length for my Quicktime bellhousing as the dimension for the TR-3650 includes the bellhousing:

Me: TKO with stock shifter reversed + bellhousing length is 16.75" + 7" = 23.75"
You: TR-3650 with integrated bellhousing is 27.13" which puts you over 4" further back than me.

    I found the TR-3650 dimensions here: http://www.pw-eng.com/aston-martin-g...omponents.html

Note that 27.13" is best case for the TR-3650, depending on the specific model it may even be 35.25". Either way 4" puts it too far back to get away with what I am doing I think.

    Hope this helps...

Thanks. That's sort of what I was thinking. I believe I will stick with the 05+ 3650 with a reversed, remote shifter. I figured the '04 would be too far back for my personal tastes.

Kevin - Do you have a photo of your tranny install from the cockpit? where did you relocate the diagonal tube so it cleard the shifter location?
    Thanks

The reversed shifter location puts it dead smack in the middle of the diagonal tube. Here is a picture with the diagonal tube cut out. I am going to re-weld it behind the shifter to make room for cup holders in front of the shifter. I am going to use a 2.5" dogleg shifter handle and a fab an adapter to move the shifter handle 1" forward and 1/2" to the drivers side to get it more centered on the trans tunnel.

    Thanks Kevin!
    Photo was very helpful.
Guess I'll just cut that bad boy out while I have my cutting stuff out and working.
Playing with seats and seating position and room in the DS footbox for my EEE wides.
Some expansion is going to be required!

I've already made a bump out for the gas pedal area. I haven't cut up the foot box wall yet to fit it until the headers are installed to see how high it can go and still have access to the header bolts. Basically a 6" or so high tapered box that extends about 1.5" under the headers from the front wall to the trans vertical wall below the dash. I also have size 13 EEE feet...

From talking to other builders, having the shifter ball somewhere between 10" and 11" from the trans vertical wall under the dash is the comfort zone for the mid-shift approach. Mine will wind up at 11". The Coyote with a true midshift and a straight stick is at 10". I find that too close to the dash personally. Shift stick height is 5" for the straight and 2.5" dogleg from Fortes.

Here is where my setup wound up:

Its perfect for me with the ball sitting exactly where it feels right and its not too close to the dash (and provides plenty of room for the forward cup holders).
