    818 Google maps????

FFR Project 818 Owner's Registry On Google Maps

Just post the below template filled in on this thread and then one of the collaborators (Xusia, Evan78 or me) should get you on the map:
    Title: Chassis #
Owner: Forum screen name and real name if desired
    Delivered: (Anticipated) Date of delivery
    Location: City, State or ZIP

Currently, the members who are able to edit the map are Xusia, Evan78, and I. It would be preferable that you just post here instead of PM'ing one of us. That way, you get on the map quicker and there's not a bunch of PM notifications up at the top (that I somehow always miss unless I'm looking for them). Still looking for 1 more person who would be willing to edit the map!

    I would participate.

EDIT: Anyone notice 1)The relationship between proximity to FFR and the number of kits; and 2)Tthe huge lack of kits in Oregon, Idaho, Utah & Nevada? SOMETHING needs to be done. Dave, I volunteer to head up the FFR office in the PNW!

Yea, that's what I would be doing. Just city with either your real name or forum name & chassis #. I'm running a beta test right now so if at least 1 other person could give me some info to input onto the map that would be great!

Great idea. I've created a lot of maps on Google Maps for my own use and for collaboration and it should work very well as proven by the 33 owners.

There is the option to allow anyone to edit the map, but I've never used it. That seems ideal as long as spammers don't mess with it.

I'd like to suggest including the owner's screen name from this forum. The 33 map is odd since the information included on there would make it difficult to actually make contact with those owners, if so desired.

I like the idea. Tim, would it show just the 818 owners (delivered)? Plus the 818s on order? Perhaps 2 different colors?

If this were to catch on and people would actually use it and be responsible I would most certainly make it be able to be edited public ally as long as they have the URL (I have the map set up so that no one can see it unless the know the URL). I originally wanted to do that but decided against it so I could play around with some stuff. Also, the design would be like thi IMHO:
    Title: Chassis #
Description: FFF Name, Date of delivery
As Evan78 suggested (thanks BTW) instead of using your real name (or undercover name) it'd be easier to use your forum name. That way if people wanted to contact you they could do so in an easier fashion without bugging you personally !

EDIT: @AZPete whenever I get to a computer I'm going to add some more pins. It'll include:
    - Solid Red Pin: Delivered and under construction
    - Solid Blue Pin: Completed
    - Solid Yellow Pin: Future 818 Owner
    - Later on some other pins will come into play.... I'm up for any other ideas for pins???

    It seems to work great!

I would caution against public editing. You should be able to give certain people the ability, which I think is a more prudent way to go.

I like the idea of adding screen names. It would make it a lot easier to contact folks. And since we are a community, focused (hopefully) around supporting and helping each other, that seems like a really good idea!

I like the idea of sticking with pins. I found some of the icons on the '33 map to be a bit big and make it more difficult to read.

Reason I didn't do the little tools and stuff is because I had no clue how too (but, we can keep that between us can't we ). I have the map set up where nobody can see it unless they know the URL. The only URL that I've given out is here on the forum. I'd like some people to be able to edit the map so I can concentrate on my build ! The way I understand it works is that you have to have a gmail account, then I add your email address as a "Collaborator" then you should be all set to edit the map and add pins. As of now, everybody is marked as a future builder. Don't know who has their 818 or not. If you do, just PM or post your chassis # and the date you received your 818.

I wish there was a office or someone affiliated with FFR (officially that is) for the West Coast and Central part of the US (I'll take the "horrible" job of heading up the Central office )!

    Indianapolis:
    Motorsports Capital of the World
    Crossroads of America
    14th largest City
Home to Dallara, John Force, Andretti, and so many other race teams.

Clearly the horrible job of Central office belongs in Indy.

I agree the tools made the map hard to read. If you zoomed out, all you saw was tools covering the entire US almost.

There are 2 options for letting other people edit the map (collaborate). You can invite people by email address or you can check the box that says "allow anyone to edit this map". If you restrict it to only invited people, there might be a limit on the number, but I have no idea what it might be.

People could help by periodically backing up the map to a KML file and posting here, just in case...

    PM Sent!

EDIT: I'd say that if me and 3 other people where able to edit this map it would be fine! I like the idea Evan78 has about backing it up to a KML. Don't know how to do it but there's always a time to learn right? If Xusia agrees to become a collaborator that would mean I would be looking for two more forum members. I'd like someone who is:
    - Active on the 818 forum
    - Has a high post count (minimum of 200)
    - Or someone like Frank818 who never seems to get off this forum !

It's easy. There's a link in the left column on the map page that just says "KML" that is a link to download a kml file.

    Sent you a PM.

If there's ever a desire for custom icons, I've done it before and it is easy. You just need a location to host the icon files, which I can provide.

Timmy - when you're ready, I suggest editing your first post to include a link to the map and instructions for owners wishing to be added. Here's a possible template:

    Title: Chassis #
Owner: Forum screen name and real name if desired
    Delivered: (Anticipated) Date of delivery
    Location: City, State or ZIP

Can we edit thread titles on this forum? Maybe 818 Owner Registry/Map is a more appropriate title?

I've tried to do that but to no avail. If it were possible to delete a thread then I could just start a new and *official* thread. I'm sure a moderator has the ability to change the title of a thread (hint Dave H).

I just noticed you started the other "When are you getting your 818" thread. Feel free to plug me in there too.

I started that in the early stages of the 818 (when pre-orders opened) to see when people were getting their 818's. Now, the excitement (for me at least) has past and now I'm more excited on where the 818's are being delivered.

EDIT: Evan78. In the title of your submission you say '14 March and then in the description it says 13 March..... Not sure which one is right !
