    Build planning

Guys spend months or years agonizing over which parts to put into a new build. Shouldn't planning a build be a forum by itself? A newbie like me could say, "I want to build a GTM with the Carbon Fiber package, powered by a modded LS3 that's tame on the street, for under 80K including paint. Oh yeah - and it should be AWD, have a quiet interior, killer stereo and driver adjustable suspension on the fly.

Then a dozen of guys who have built these cars can say that's do-able; but only if you can live without the AWD and the on-the-fly suspension and BTW, this is what you'll need:
...Oh, and if you use ABC brakes, they have them in the blue you're looking for and you won't have to paint them.

Planning well can really save a lot, and the end result would be closer to expectations. Just my .02

I already posted this under Dave's Four Days In Thread, but now I see a suggestions thread. So at the risk of being redundant and in no particular order:

    1) A photo gallery area/garage etc. where we can post our build photos, photos of completed cars, events, shows, O/T stuff, maybe organized by profile. Kinda (Facebook) style. This would kick the POM & calendar ideas into gear too.

    2) Custom user titles - Mods/Admins get to have all the fun. Maybe its the kid in me, but I like giving myself a custom title after reaching a certain number of posts.

    3) More thread subscription options. Right now you have to select the subscribe function each time you visit a thread. I like where you're auto-subscrubed as soon as you post to that thread.

    4) more smileys

    5) Newest Posts/Threads list as the home page.

    6) Larger Avatars would be nice. Right now we gotta squint to see what it is.

    7) An FFForum Mobile version for smartphones. I don't know how it works. I'm not ech savvy, but I know that yahoo and other big sites recognize when a mobile device is accessing them, and as a result you get a cleaner, easier to navigate webpage designed specifically for mobile devices. Doesn't necessarily HAVE to be an App. Just a mobile weblink.

Really looking forward to seeing how the build Wiki comes together for the different cars, and also the FFR FAQ page.

We need a picture of the month, but we need to do it better. I never understood why other forums wouldn't include build pictures, there are some great ones out there.

Can we please have a South Central subforum under Central - to house Texas, Oklahoma, etc.? Right now Texas is under South Western which is under Pacific - last time I checked Texas was nowhere near the Pacific...

I just made some changes and additions to the regional forums. Please bear with me while I get this right! Under Central I now have Northern Central, Midwest and Southern Central discussions. The Southwest was moved from Pacific into Mountain and renamed Southern Mountain discussions. A Northern Mountain discussions forum was added.

Are these alignments OK? Do we need to break out Texas into it's own Sub forum?

Thanks for the feedback everyone, we are listening and trying to get it right.

PS The advertising links pages are going in tonight, vendor images will be added to usernames so everyone will know who the supporting vendor are and the forum fonts have been darkened so they are easier to read.

How about a "tips of the trade" or "how to" that is general to all builds. If someone has a neat little trick that is applicable to builds across the board there is currently no way to share.

How about a place for us DarkSide guys? A sub forum for alt-power source wierd-o's would be great. While I admire the purest FoMoCo only types, the fact that little chevys have dominated the HotRod scene is hard to denigh. With the popularity of the new Gen 3 & 4 mills, we need some place to share info, tips, tricks, and how to's to help each member.

Come to think of it... a section called "Power Plants" with sub-sections for Little Ford, Big Ford, Mod Ford, Bow-Tie, and Other would be great. This way engine related questions could be kept away from the main forum leaving it for Chassis/Body build related questions only.

    What say you?????

I would like to see a How to Video section covering various aspects of the build.

And for a start, how about some vids on putting in and pulling out the aluminium panels. I know you can figure it out, but finding the best way before you have scratched the panel or the powder coated frame can be a challenge.

There is a great deal of build info on that other forum under "FFR FAQ" on the top web page that has been helpful to me, and hopefully others. Is there anyway we can get some of that stuff on here ?

I hope there is no issue with copyright etc.

I'd vote against a clone of Wayne's Pub appearing here. Larry Johnson actually asked me if I wanted to host the Pub back in the day, and I said no. I enjoy a pretty girl as much as the next guy, and I am hardly a prude, but do we need that on the FFR Forum? I think not.

Also, I stay logged in on this site, I never have to give my password. Same on the other site. So my son can see what he wants to see over there, which doesn't make me happy. We use Trend security to block all the porn sites and even questionable sites, but the Pub clears the hurdles and comes through the security. Grrr.

Lots of great suggestions here though for new forums, excellent ideas.

Adding another comment here to say; if we outlaw politics, religion, and porn (all of which have approximately seven billion websites we can visit for those discussions) we'll have a FANTASTIC forum. (Not that we don't already, but you get my meaning.)

That's OK, I wouldn't mind this thread lasting for a long, long time as it provides feedback that folks feel would make for a better site.

Bagdad Bob, We are experimenting with aditional sub-forums under the '33 forum to help us build content. We can't just take what is on FFCars and repost it here.

If someone wants to take the reins to create a new FAQ I'd support it!

Look at the date of the post above "Mcwho", Jethrow
's post was dated 06-19-2011, 06:48 AM thus mrwho was dredging up an much older thread where the decision was already made to not include "waynes lounge"

This site is a great resource but the search tool is weak. Why can't we search within our section of interest? The search rule that restricts the minimum number of search characters needs to be reduced to three letters. We can't search for wrx, ls1, ecu, etc.

    Thanks for hosting the forum!

Tim, I just adjusted the minimum to 3 letters. Thanks for the suggestion. Also, you can search any sub-forum you like. I don't quite understand "section of interest". If you could elaborate...

    Dave,

This is a GREAT idea. I would suggest that the recipient of a monthly award is not eligible for a specified time period. 6-months, 1-year etc.

The default is 40 posts per page. I'll have to look into whether that is a user option.

Where to drive or roads you can not miss

I wonder how far from home you typicaly would drive. There could be a section for roads you must travel! How many people found a great road after years of traveling past it?

Maybe grouped by state then major city or start and end location?

I live by Sacramento and there is a cool road heading south from Folsom to Rancho Murieta! But be carefull, on one part you could end up with four wheels in the air!

Hi I'm new to all this, is there a way of finding people who live in Australia for instance easily? Being so far away it would be great to make contact easily with people close by willing to talk and help. Like Canada I'm assuming Australia will have its quirks re emission control and licensing.
    Cheers and thanks

    Hi Braden.

I don't think there is an Australian sub-section here, but for what it's worth I am Australian (Perth). Can I help in any way?

    Braden and Tim,

I have no objection to an Austalian Forum(s)

Do you see any reason why it would need to be further sub-divided? If so, do you have a suggestion for Australian sub forums?

    Hi David.
I am not sure how much traffic an Australian sub-forum might generate, but I welcome the idea - it might be nice to have a place where the aussie F5 owners can meet and greet. For sure it would not need further sub-dividing. For what it's worth there is maybe around 10 F5's (of a few different varieties) in my state (WA) and more in some of the other states.
    Thanks

    Hi Tim
Lovely to hear from you, I'm in Perth as well. Have you build a car yet? I'm wondering about the 65 or the 818 and what the real cost is for us in the colonies?
Thanks for getting back to me.

Hey Braden. Yes I have built a car (Mk4 Roadster) and I can also tell you at least 2 65's have been built in WA as well. One of those builders is well known in the local Cobra Club. If you have any specific questions you can send me a PM, or maybe start a thread in the new Aussie forum.
