Had the 818 apart to replace the engine. Just thought I'd post some pictures without the coves on.

Gotta love shiny new parts! Is that a kit or DIY? Nice to see a few more cars getting dry sumps, definitely the Achilles heel of the EJ.

An unfortunately expensive necessity, but as far a dry sumps go that's not a bad price. I'm hopeful I won't need one, but time will tell.

That's what I said, before I my engine started making that bad sound.
The time for me was 300 autocross runs and 7 track days.

Nice, what is the ratio difference between crank speed and pump speed?

The pump is a 5.5" diameter. I don't know what the crank is for sure, but it's about the same.
I don't think the speed of the pump is that critical, as it is scavenge only.

Bob, when you did the bump steer kit, did you drill out the spindle or did you use the taper bolt?

    Dry Sump Pump mock up

We mocked up our Aviaid dry sump install on my blown engine.

My forester AC compressor bracket wouldn't work. Fortunately I had one off an Impreza:
    Attachment 58981

Then mounted the Aviaid pump adaptor bracket.
    Attachment 58982

Then Mounted pump: I choose holes based on easiest access to bottom fitting:
    Attachment 58983

Then mounted belts. This belt is 2" longer than the original AC belt.
Just noticed that the belt packages our on opposite sides.
    Attachment 58984

    Done:

Thanks Bob - Are you running the 4.5" ride height? Have you settled on spring weights you are happy with front and rear? Looking at the post you linked me to, it doesn't look like you ended up being happy with the settings.

    Hindsight,
I'm at 5" RH until, maybe 4.5" with us sitting in the car.
    running 350f and 500r springs.
I have a bunch of non spec suspensions changes. Don't go by my bump steer spacers.

    Steel tubing for scavenge lines.

Mike and I decided to use steel tubing on our dry sump scavenge line because they have to run close to the headers. This is our first time working with anything bigger than brake line. We actually used our harbor freight hydraulic pipe bender to bend the tubing.

We will put the oem heat shields on the header. We are going to use 2000 deg fire sleeve over the tubing and hose under the engine. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/dei-010474

Here is a picture of out mock up.

I used steel lines to my dry sump pan.
    I didn't want to take a chance of melting a hose.(or worse)
I test fitted this EL header and the OEM UL header wit all factory heat shield.
I still have to fire sleeve the tubes and Hoses. I will also wrap the headers.
    Bottom view:
    Attachment 59637

    tubes under header:
There is two fingers of clearance between headers and tubes.
    Attachment 59638

    Tubes up the side:
I have a short piece of vacuum rated in the vertical tubes for flexibility.
    Attachment 59639

    Top View:
The pump hoses are working out.

    Visit to local Motors,

Last week Michael and I got a personal tour of the Local Motors micro factory in Knoxville TN.
I got to sit in the world's first 3d printed car.

I also sat in David Riha's FFR Cobra.
All of his panels are Carbon fiber.

Looks Good! Although I'm still not digging the hard lines...yet.

For others looking at the pics, the DS pump outlet to the tank is on the side of the pump, not the bottom. The bottom outlet was/is the standard configuration if you buy the kit from Element. I'm sure Bob can attest that putting the -12AN to the side is much easier than connecting it on the bottom.

And I have two pumps configured with the side outlet if anybody wants one.

    Hey Gator,
The hard lines were a PITA to make. But I am very happy with the finish product. Knowing that the hard lines have zero chance of failing from heat, is very satisfying. I will do the hard lines on my second car without hesitation. With all that said, the proof will not be known until a couple of racing seasons.

The Aviaid side outlet scavenge pump worked out great. A pump with a bottom outlet would have been a pain fitting up the hose.

    Aviaid pump brackeet.jpg

Getting the Aviaid dry sump system installed was an engineering exercise (much like the rest of the 818). Having our blown engine on and stand for mock up saved us many hours of frustration.

Gator, I will need one of your pumps for my second car this winter. See you at SEMA.
    Bob.

Took the 818 out on some local highways today to test the replacement engine and dry sump system.
    Noticed a couple of things:

It was a cool day about 60F. coolant temp came up and held 190f very solid. Oil temp came up much slower and only got up to 165F.
    Is that hot enough?

Oil pressure was in the mid 80psi any thing over 3000 rpms. dropped down into the 30s while Idle speed.

Idle problem. When leaving off the throttle, the car would stall or almost stall every time. Any suggestions?
Engine is 04 FXT DBW (TGV deleted) (evap removed) ( PCV removed) stock tune.

During our test run tonight, we did a WOT up hill on a highway ramp. Here is a 3 second snap shot. Half way through it we did a 2nd to 3rd shift. I would like for any tuner type guys to make an comments if all is good or you see any problems.
Also, is there anything else I should be data logging?
    Thanks

Chart of 1st hot lap at NCM today.

Below is a chart of our first hot lap at NCM Motorsports park today.
Here are my comments, please add your comments or questions.

Top purple line is oil temperature, It rises up to 200f, but is doesn't look like its going much higher.
Next Red line is coolant temperature, It rises up to 188f, but is doesn't look like its going much higher. ambient was 80f.

The green line is oil pressure. It is hanging around 90PSI. I don't know if I can believe these numbers, seems to high. The press does drop into the 40s at idle.

The light blue line is intake temperature at the MAF. It is a straight line about 80f as I am snorkeling that from the side vent

The blue line is speed. About 120 at the start/finish line. 2 minute 30 second lab time. Speed gets as low as 33 in a very tight corner. There was some traffic on this lap.

The orange line is RPM. High point during the lap is 6800 and low point is 3000.

The light blue line is boost. I believe the max boost is set to 11.6 PSI 04FXT stock. I am kind of surprised to see my boost hitting peaks of 13 after an up shift. Please comment.

Wish I had some feedback to offer bob, I'm sure many are eager to see how the dry sump is working. Glad to see you're back at the track!

    Yeah how's the sump working?

13psi vs 11.6, that seems like short overboost, I believe it's a common thing but I don't know how often that happens on OEM cars or even if it did happen on the Forester.

The dry sump is working great. The oil pressure in much higher than I expected.
Maybe I need to calibrate my electronics with a mechanical gauge.

The over-boost is like the waste-gate is slow to open.
But it's only happening when Michael does a very fast up-shift and slam the pedal back to WOT.

We were hoping for a full day of testing but had a RUCR event.

Does any one else have comments about the chart above:

Bob: When my car (Chad's) is all warmed up, I am seeing 90+psi on the oil pressure on the track and 30+ psi at idle. When it is cold, it is 90+ psi all the time. Last time I was out the air temp was 100F. Water temp was 185 - 195 F, Oil temp was190 - 210F with the front coolers taped off, but the back cooler open. AWIC after the intercooler was 110F or ambient +10, which is what I have been seeing. I think we have a similar set-up. Rob T

I am going out again on Friday. I'll take a look at the oil pressure again. It is only supposed to be in the mid 70's, so it will be interesting to see what happens to the water, oil and AWIC temps. If I get ambient plus 10 on the AWIC, I should be making a little more power.

    Hey Rob,
I followed Chad progress closely, you got a great car once the oil temp issue was solved.
For oil cooling I have a MerCruiser liguid/liquid exchanger tied in right before the water pump.

Your PSI numbers are similar to mine, that alleviates my feelings of distress.
By the way, I'm running Rotella T6 5W40 Diesel oil.

I am set up to measure post AWIC temps but I only have 2 free ECU input to data log with, so I chose oil temp and pressure for this test.
Keep us informed on your numbers. It give us something to shoot for.
    Thanks

    short story

Ok so I was at WalMart buying a big bag of dog food and a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. Now why else would I be buying dog chow, RIGHT? So on impulse I said No, I don't have a dog, I'm starting the Purina Diet again, and that I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital last time, but I lost 50 pounds before I woke up in intensive care with IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and all you do is load your pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food POISONED me. I said No, I stepped off a curb to sniff a poodle's butt and a car hit me! I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack from laughing so hard.
Now that you've read it I have to confess - I copied it from someone else... share and make someone else smile today!
This made me laugh...hope you enjoyed it too. Lol (Have a great day, friends)

You had me going. I used to work for a pet food company, and along with water, dry dog food is nutritionally complete. You could live on it. Our company made it to human food standards, too - because you never know when a kid or something will eat it. Right until the poodle part......

I am a very visual person. I could just picture this happening at Walmart.

At PRI, we did a room per day. That was all my feet and ankles could handle.
We came away with some ideas related to trailers, fuel starvation and front suspension.
I was surprised there was almost zero EV stuff. I expect EV racing to be 50% of the market in 10-15 years.

I think you should have a hybrid track day event. Maybe in a few years.
