Is anyone planning on using the FA20 engine?

    Besides me, that is...

Same size/weight, WAY more power potential.
Considerable more efficient, not much more expensive.

People have boosted the stock engine at 12.5:1 to over 400whp with success.

2015 WRX is reported to have peak torque from 2500 to 5500rpm.

7500RPM redline (stock) doesn't hurt either.

    Fire away...

Where are you sourcing this engine for "not much more" money than a donor EJ20/25?

I'm not really sure you can compare a purely stock FA20 to a built EJ. I've also heard of people pushing 400 awhp on a completely stock EJ255. That doesn't mean it's reliable or consistently repeatable.

It would be a powerful combo, if you could get your hands on one of the latest gen wrx 6 speeds I think you'd have something special.

No Limit near me built a pretty awesome turbo BRZ.

At the moment I think Hydra is the best option.
They have a bunch of maps and have control over direct and port injectors

Sti 6 speed for sure, but why the latest gen?

Might want to rethink the Hydra. I have customers that have continuing issues and the tech support is less than helpful. YMMV

The na fa's only advantage at stock trim is direct injection, but the one in the brz is not built to be a turbo engine and without building it for that purpose will not last like an turbo ej when boosted over a longer time frame. If anything the new xt turbo fa is what you want for a boosted new direct injected engine.

What kind of problems are people having with the Hydra?
I really would like to know since I bought one.

Are the problems with the 2.5/2.6 or the 2.7?

The XT turbo is DI only I believe. FA20 is direct/port combo.

Very interested in the feedback on the Hydra though...

The new xt is DI and has DAVCS along with a twin scroll turbo. With a tune it will be a beast with great low end grunt. My friend just boosted his brz, it goes to the dyno soon, I will keep you posted.

Ok on the hydra. Still waiting for Wayne to chime in...

Is the new XT DI only?? There is a big difference if it is DI only or DI + PI.

The DI/PI is a Toyota patent and only in the brz because there relationship. But Toyota is part owner of Fuji so maybe this intergration will be possable. I do know the new wrx engine will pretty be the xt's DI engine with 268 hp. The Sti will prob be a 2.0 with around 315- 325. Also either system works much better than standard injection. I would think a turbo engine would be where you want to start rather than running the brz engine turbo. I would run the brz fa20 na

In an ideal world yes,but the FA20T isn't availabe yet state side.
Besides, I really want the PI capability for high RPMs.
DIA is mostly for mid RPM and changing DI inyectors is a lot harder than PI.
There are guys making 400 with the stock 12.5:1 due to the high efficent head.

How long it will last depends on the engineering.

Im not aware of any differences in the block or the crank between the fa20 n/a and the fa20t.
SCR changes from 12.5:1 to 10.6:1.
Not sure of any other internal differences.
    So thats good for us...
The abilit to keep port injection I think is great!

Allegedly lighter weight than the STi six speed. Allegedly all mechanical no dccd to fiddle with, easier FWD conversion. Just an opinion.

probably correct, but heads and cam profiles are different so I've read. Jury is still out on if they will be that much better or not, and worth the $ premium they will likely fetch over the NA FA20

Bringing this back from the dead, anyone put any further thought into using the FA20 or FA20T?

Having a real hard time seeing advantages in starting with a lower displacement, normally aspirated 4-cylinder. Especially given the $$$.

I would love to use this engine. Direct injection would be a big win. And I don't know about you guys, but I love the idea of moving to a timing chain from the belt in the EJ motors. The FA20 bottom mounts the turbo, though, so I think you might have to relocate the turbo to fit in the 818. That's not confirmed info by any means, but something to consider when planning your build.

If you could get a wrecked car and steal the full wiring harness and stock ECU, you could use ECUTEK to tune it, and you'd get the RaceRom features, which are awesome. No-lift shifting and launch control...that would be awesome.

Agreed. Maybe someone will pioneer the engine before I can get to it .
