    Smile Over Chassis Body Buck

So with the 50% off sale, I pulled the trigger last week... I am working on getting the garage together and have completed a chassis dolly. I have a basic body buck donated by Stromspeed (Thanks!)... I need to modify it to an over the chassis body buck so I can maintain some garage space... Anyone have any ideas on how wide I need to make the frame to clear the chassis on each side??? I was thinking of just adding some 2x4s across each panel 6.5' long... will this do it??? Also, how much higher than the buck will the body sit... I need to ensure I clear the garage as well... I would appreciate any assistance possible...

    Chris

    About 6'-5"

Body Buck with stilts for FFR Roadster

    To add stilts:

    Per the following pics:

Center section is 8’ long. By doing this you can use 8’ 2x4’s. The center section 4’x8’ OSB cut in half also makes for a nice shelf. The vertical legs are made from 10’ 2x4’s cut in half. Otherwise everything is 8’ 2x4’s. I also used 70mm casters with two of them being locking types. In retrospect I probably should have gotten at least two that don’t swivel. The combination of the 5’ legs matched to the 24” vertical spacing on the diagram actually comes out to 36”. When you factor in the extra 2x4 at the bottom and the castor height you gain another 4-5 inches. The shelf helps with some of the racking that can happen if you push from one side but you still need to be careful. Foam pipe insulation goes along the top where the body meets. It’s a good idea to duct tape this down so it won’t shift or fall off.

    Parts list:
3 sheets of OSB 8’x4’. (I used 5/8” thick and it almost seems too thick)
    Qty: 9 8' 2x4
    Qty: 2 10’ 2x4
    4 casters
1 package of 4 pieces of foam tubing insulation.
    Duct tape
Nails and long screws for the casters

Instructions from Ray look right. I just measured mine, and it's exactly 77 inches wide inside the stilts. This not only clears the chassis but also with the wheels/tires mounted. Make it as high as you can to just fit under the garage door. Then you can have your chassis up pretty high on jack stands (your back will thank you) and it still clears. Mine with my Mk4 looked like this a while ago. Much further along now.

Thanks Ray! That is perfect edwardb I am thinking on adding two 6.5' braces to the existing inside faces of the buck boards i currently have cut since they are cut to the original plans from FFR... And then I can use two 2x4x8 to span the two faces and then run the 5' stilts to 4x4s on each side at ground level that I have the casters on.... See any issues with that idea? How much does that body weigh?

I haven't weighed the body, but I've heard/read that it's around 180 lbs. That sounds about right. Two people can lift it pretty comfortably. Likely it weighs less than the elevated body buck. Don't overbuild the thing. It needs to support its own weight being rolled around. If reasonably strong, it will be fine with the added weight of the body.

Does anyone have plans how to make the body buck? Ray's CAD link didn't work.

Check the links in this thread. Information for elevated body buck plus modified profile for a Mk4. I used this info to build the body buck for my Mk4 pictured above.
