Rebuild on a 250,000km donor WRX

I managed find a 2002 WRX with 250,000kms on it to use as a donor. With limited recent service history I decided to do a timing belt change as well as a full service. So with a Gates replacement timing belt kit with new water pump, and a full gasket set, I set to work tearing into the engine. It was showing signs of 12 Canadian winters...

So with some elbow grease and some rattle can paint, it has started to look like a clean engine again.

    Add wrinkle finish red paint...

    Intake manifold.

    Lifting bracket.

    Parts ready to be assembled:

    Oil pan:

I installed the KillerB oil pickup tube to prevent any potential failures down the line as well.

    Valve covers installed.

Still a ways to go, but looking much better than it did...

    Hi Jim,

I am out West in Calgary. There are a few donors here, but this one had a rebuilt status so I was able to get it for $5,200. All the others were $7.5k plus, so I figured I had a couple of grand to spend on servicing and upgrades, so it was worth the risk.

Are you looking to build an 818 after the Cobra build? Here is the one we built a few years back now

    Hi Tony,

The timing belt and water pump were quite straight forward. Just makes sure you have downloaded the workshop manual first as it gives you the order to put the belt on, as well as the direction to turn the right two cams.

    Cheers,

    Steve

The engine rebuild is looking really good and I noticed you deleted the TGVs as well. The oil cooler also looks new (or possibly painted?). I'm assuming you replaced your timing tensioner and timing idler pulleys? If not, I'd suggest doing that as well.
