RoRi's Custom Parts - Steering Column Spacers

These steering column spacers allow you to collapse the steering column to position the steering wheel closer to the dash and eliminate the gap left by using the factory mounting points. The spacer allows for up to 50mm(2") of adjustment. You can get up to 1.25" by simply pressing the steering shaft into the outer sleeve; don't press it farther than this by going beyond the thick part of the shaft. You can gain more by collapsing the outer sleeves together and then you can press the steering shaft in farther, again not going past the thick part of the shaft. Access to a large press will make this easy, you can also use a floor jack under something really heavy (i.e.: semi-trailer), or some users have mentioned simply using a hammer to tap everything together.

$50 plus $5.80 priority shipping in the USA.

This is what it looks like in the stock location:

    With the bracket:

Sorry for the late reply Frank. I'm enjoying some vacation time in FL. I'll be taking orders again when I get back.

Just so people know, I am 5'6'' and I need to collapse the column by 0.5 to 1''. The other possibility is I fix my seat very high (4 to 6''). The sw is too close to me to be comfortable and if I push the seat back, we know what happens, it hit the tank fw. I think this column spacer could be very useful for a lot of people.

Yes, I think I used the nut and bolt that FFR provided for the steering column. A thin walled or 1/4" drive socket should fit nicely.

Yes the 2 bolts/nuts that came with the FFR kit + 2 more. 2 bolts to attach the spacer on the column and 2 more to attach the spacer on the FFR column bracket. I'll check that out tomorrow.

Robert, might want to think about revisiting the spacer. It's not long enough. The 2" of adjustment is just too short for me, I need 2-1/4" to 2-3/8" and there was more possible to collapse on the column. I will have to enlarge the FFR bracket holes, but just a thought for future versions.

just an fyi for others.... i drilled another set of holes 1/2" towards the headlights, ffr bolts still fit good with washers. this will give you a total of 2.5" of adjustment or get the wheel 2.5" closer to the dash. hope its not to close to the dash since i havent installed that yet but i had no problem getting the steering column to press down that far. used a bottle jack in my basement and sat the wheel on an end table and pressed against an overhead I beam. used a schedule 40 pipe to press outer column then did the shaft. shaft actually fell all the way in thru the bushing/bearing but was able to use coat hanger hooks to pull bushing out then grabbed the shaft with pliers and lifted it back up/out. shaft moved very easily on mine so it made reassy easy.

Did your chassis' have two sets of mounting holes for the column? My chassis had two sets about a half inch apart. It sounds like FFR has done away with the second forward set of holes.

2 sets for me too, but no place to drill a third one. I have to check again on that.

I've had a few requests recently for brackets so I went ahead and placed an order for 10 more. They are due in at the end of January. PM me if you want to get in on the order.

From an aesthetic perspective, I think the wheel looks better closer to the dash. From a functional perspective, does it put to wheel too close to the pedals? I am 5"11" with 31" inseam and don't have seats in my 818 to test sit in yet. I have asked Rori to reserve me one of the spacers.....do you all think it will be a good fit for me? What are some of your heights/inseams?

It's adjustable. You can collapse the column as little as you want. I'm 6' 30" inseam. I'd like the steering wheel to be a bit lower (even with the tilt all the way down) but the ability to adjust forward and back was critical.

Arg! Now that I see this... I REALLY want one. :-( Sounds like steel plate will be my solution as well, unless someone wants to CNC fab some aluminum ones yet again! ;-)

For those interested: you don't need a bracket to reduce the gap between the OEM Subaru column cover and the FFR dashboard. I was able to reduce the gap by drilling some holes in the column mount further towards the dashboard. You also need to collapse the steering rack, which is easy to do by lightly tapping with a hammer. Just pull the rack out, remove the steering wheel and tap the end that goes into the steering joint near the steering rack a bit. Draw a line on this shaft with a marker - only about 1/2-1" needs to be collapsed.
