ECU and Coolant temp gauge question.

    Hello All,

I'm wanting to replace my water temp gauge with an aftermarket unit. Can I just replace the sender at the stock location without causing any ECU problems (bypassing/removing stock sender wiring)?

I believe the water temp gauge is behind the Alt, further back from the oil pressure idiot light correct?
    Thanks- Chad

Why not keep it and run another port to your other gauge to bypass the issues

That's what I'm asking. I'm seeing if it would cause problems if removed for it an aftermarket sender/gauge. I will not have the stock dash for long. I have the aluminum coolant pipes, so installing water temp sensor adapter will be really tight.(http://www.rallysportdirect.com/Mish...DNGhoC2dfw_wcB)

Not sure if bypassing the throttle body coolant hoses, adding a 2 barb with 1/8npt Tee for sender would be the best spot. Thoughts?
    Thanks- Chad

The stock ecu needs the temp sender on certain years the sender does the ecu and gauge. There are plenty of places to mount an aftermarket unit separately IMO.

I know at least some of the stock Subaru ECUs have compensation tables for coolant temp (it adjusts timing I think).

Yeah it would cause problems, you would need to trick the ecu coolant temp values, I have never seem this done on the oem temp sensor. I guess any thing is possible, but wouldn't be my first choice. For and easy tap in add a npt coupler at the heatercore loop.

Sounds good. I didn't even think of the heater core loop!
