TBird IRS Outer CV Joint Removal

    Hi,

I'm hoping someone here can help me. I have a '95 Mercury Cougar XR-7 IRS that I'm using for my build. I had a machine shop redrill the uprights and rotors to the 5 on 4.5" bolt circle diameter and install new wheel bearings so I'm good to go there.

I can't figure out how to get the outer CV joints off the rear axles.

On page 10 of this pdf. form:

    https://www.factoryfive.com/wp-conte...-STD-rev-K.pdf

it says, "Slide the larger joint off the shaft and set to the side."

Then on page 11 it shows a picture of the axle shaft completely disassembled.

I tried sliding the outer CV joint off the shaft but there's no way it going to just "slide" off. I found the inner "C" clip and I removed it from the groove but that didn't help. I don't want to take a hammer to the thing and 'see' if that will work (and with my luck, screw up the axle shaft).

How do I get the outer CV joint off the axle shaft?
I hope someone can please help me.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me,

    Dave

I haven’t had to do it yet but I think FFR has an instruction sheet on how to do it. Give them a call.

Bill I am not an expert on this subject but I have had the same problem with a Tbird irs.
Slide the outer CV off is somewhat of an understatement. I put the halfshaft in my vise and took the inner clip off just to get some slack. Then I took a fairly soft chisel, held it low on the cv and knocked the crap out of it several times in different places around the cv and it finally came. My shaft looks the same on both ends just like the shorter one from FFR. Wear your safety glasses of course. :-)
    Good luck.

I did a quick check and didn’t find the post on removing the cv-joint but the easiest way is to get a piece of PVC tubing that will just slip over the axle and is several inches longer than the axle. Then with the tube setting vertical on the floor slip the axle into the tube and raise the axle so the cv-joint is a foot or so above the tube and let it drop. The axle should pop out. The other choice is to hold the axle in a vice and use a soft punch and a big hammer. Place the punch on the inter race of the cv-joint and then hit the punch with the hammer until the cv-joint pops off. I have never tried either one just repeating what I have read.

Yep, the pipe drop method. It sometimes is more of a slam down method. It all depends on how stiff the clip is on the shaft.

When using the drift or punch method I add a hose clamp. You want the drift as close as parallel to the axle as possible but you don't want the end to slip up into the working area of the inner part of the CV when your hammer hits it. So put the hose clamp around the end of the drift and tighten just so it is snug. It may deform a little depending how many hits you need so tighten it if it gets a little slack. This allows you to beat the crap out of it w/o worry of damaging the working surfaces.
