    Interest Check: Turbo Heat Shield

10-29-14 Update: Official FS thread here:
    http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showt...877#post175877

Gauging interest on a turbo heat shield. Target price is $55 (+ shipping).

My cobb heatshield wouldn't fit due to how close the strut tower brace is. This design will bolt to the strut tower itself using 3 rivnuts (supplied with heatshield) instead of bolting to the downpipe/turbo bracket. The mounting plate and the heatshield will both be stainless steel with the name laser etched into the mounting plate. The prototype name plate is aluminum with the name CNC'd. The final design also adds a third screw to the name plate just below motorsports to create a more rigid triangular design. I have only verified fitment with a TD04. I'll offer a 10% discount to anyone with a different turbo that wants to be the first to do a test fit. There is a good amount of room for adjustment so unless you went stupid large on the turbo, it should fit.

This will help prevent radiant heat from soaking your intercooler and deflect some rising convection currents while at a standstill.

If there is enough interest I'll place an order.

    Prototype pictures:

    Hi Craig,

I was planning on getting a turbo blanket, but I'd prefer this for the price, and to support a forum vendor. Stock EJ255 (TD04).

    Thanks,

I have to test my Grimmspeed shield first. If that has clearance issues, then I'm in

Not sure. I can go look tomorrow. I've been home sick the last two days and haven't made it into the garage.

Its much too big for a small box. It should fit in an 8x8x8 at which point it goes by weight only. I can get it quoted and post it up.

I bought a Grimm Speed shield. That would not fit at all over the TD04. I am getting a Turbo blanket. Like others have asked, if it will fit over the blanket, I would consider one.

On my car, the outlet flange on the turbo is pretty much directly underneath the strut support. I only have 1/2" of clearance. The heatshield is ~.080" thick. You might be able to get a blanket and a heatshield in there, but things would definitely be rubbing. A blanket by itself might rub too. Seeing how much some of these engines have rocked I'd wonder if on stock mounts if the turbo doesn't hit the brace.

I will add this to the planned buy once I determine what I'm doing on the turbo. I may end up testing a turbo for ya.

I've only tested it on a stock turbo.

I was using a drill press and on the last hole, as the bit broke through it jammed and spun the workpiece. It had a nice tang on the end that came around and took out a nice slice. It was probably 2 months ago and it still feels weird and sometimes hurts.

I sliced open my right index finger to the bone a few years ago. Although the stitches come out and the skin heals quick, it takes a long time for the nerves to heal. It probably took a year to regain full sensation in my finger tip. Little shooting pains and aches are good, it shows that the nerve are regenerating!

I have a grimmspeed heat shield on mine. I had to cut a channel in it around the strut brace for clearance and for the bolt holes to line up. I do not have any pictures of it at the moment but can take some for anybody interested. If Mechie had this option when I did mine I would have just ordered it because it is a better option and far easier to install.

tell me about it! my damage is in the spinal cord... highest one is at C5-C6 Just got MRI results and it has grown 3x due to my last attack. Sadly no MRI down in the L3 area where I had my original MS attack in July, 1991. Throws a huge wrench in my 818 build!

I have noticed slight improvement over time in one foot... over 23 years! Nerve issues SUCK, everyone needs to be careful while cutting and drilling!

My wife's cousin was diagnosed with MS a few years ago, I can't image the challenges of living with it for over twenty years. Best of luck...

I dodged a bullet when I had my motorcycle accident 8 years ago; I fractured T8, T6, T1 & C7. Luckily, I had no spinal cord damage and walked out of the hospital after three days (albeit in a torso brace and cervical collar I had to wear for twelve weeks!). I have some issues due to the T6 healing with a 30 degree compression, and the C7 spinal process not completely fusing. However, as long as I keep all the back muscles in shape, I'm fully functional. I can still squat heavy, backpack, ski all day... I'm not complaining as it could have easily been much worse.

I haven't done any testing with numbers, but this guy did. He tested heatshield only and then heatshield plus blanket.
    http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2406363

Heat shield -- shield + blanket - difference
    turbo-- 352 - 105 - 247
    TMIC-- 112 - 83 - 29
    heatshield-- 137 - 90 - 47

From what I remember reading about heat shielf vs shield in general that blankets are better, but a good blanket usually costs more (vs a cheaper turbo wrap), they may wear out and need periodic replacement (several year intervals), but both is best.

The CNC at work is down, but when it's back I'm going to make two brackets and send off two heatshields for them to be test fit with blankets.

Here is a blanket made specifically for the WRX. It sells for $95.

Thanks, since I'm running a JDM intercooler which is 15-20 larger than the USDM intercooler I want to take advantage and make sure I'm getting the most reduced/deflected heat as possible, so a heat shield that would allow for an optional blanket would be ideal.

Got some quotes. Cost will be $55 + shipping. It looks mostly like the one in the top picture except it's all stainless. The logo plate is stainless with the name laser etched and has three attachment points instead of 2. I'll have updated photos and a FS thread soon.

haha I had to go modify my rev 1 prototype to accept my rev 2 aluminum bracket so I could take a pic. Remember, the final version has a steel bracket, it's just easier and faster for me to make aluminum pieces. I leave most steel to the pros.

As they said in the market in Guatemala, "Special just for you!" and then they name some stupidly high price. You can order now, but I don't actually have parts yet.

You have to purchase every single last part to get the discount. Send me a pm with the parts you were interested in and I'd be willing to make a package deal. Some of it depends on the part as my margins vary by part.

Side note, I was thinking while in the shop today it would be fun to have a little facebook discount "game". Something like, post a picture of yourself wearing a Zero dB on your FB and tag Zero dB and get 5% off.

    FS thread is now up:
