I need to fabricate an access panel into the top left panel of my driver's side footbox. I found one excellent example in the "other" FFR forum, however any pictures, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Just finished mine. I hope to post some photos of this very thing within the next couple days.
Here is what i did for mine. I sized it by the area not covered by the body. Of course its a Mk 4 but it may give you a idea.
Here's mine.

Just curious, what purpose does the access to the footbox serve? Just wondering if it's something I should plan for on the build.
Thanks!
What was I going to say?
access to the fuse panel, as well as any issues you might have with steering or bake pedal assmembly, definitly gets you access should you need to replace the clutch saftey switch!!

Thanks for asking Matt....I was wondering the same thing.
I used the Moroso panel which Jegs and Summit both sell. I also placed one on the rear deck above the fuel cell, to access the fuel sending unit.
OK, a little late completing the project, but here's a little different method. Maybe not as pretty, but I'm all for simple. easy and effective.
This one's a pre-assembly view with a shim used to facilitate the hinge opening that also visibly balances the box. The hinge is SS:
