    Oil Pans and Dipsticks

Sharing some info I learned today. Not all STI oil pans are created equal. There is one pan for the 04STI and 05STI, LGT, and OBXT. It has a matching dipstick. There is a second pan for pretty much all other 2.5L pans 06+ WRX, )6+STI, 06+LGT, FXT.

    Dipsticks:
The 11140AA120 looks like it fits only 2004/2005 STI and 2005 outback XT and 2.5GT.
The 11140AA150 looks like it fits every other 2.5 motor ever (turbo, NA, etc).

    Oil Pans:
11109AA131 ; 11109AA130 fit the same list as the 120 dipstick
11109AA151 ; 11109AA150 fit the same list as the 150 dipstick

    Dipstick guide tube:
15144AA011 ; 15144AA010, seems to be the same across all models and not a factor.

    What does this mean?

People talk about "upgrade to the STI pan" all the time. The 06+ pan is better, and the dipsticks are different. 06+ dipsticks are shorter, meaning you'll hold more oil if you fill to full.

How much oil would you run?

I just installed my STI pan... PN??? (Edit: followed your link, I have the 151 pan and associated pickup tube and windage tray ) and still have my original wrx dip stick. I put in 5 qts of oil and plan on marking the dipstick with the new full level after I start it up again to fill the filter etc... should I run more than 5 qts???

I always ran ~4.5 in mine. I think the pan capacity was 4.2, but total engine capacity was higher. I recall a builder years ago recommending just running 5 as it's easier to measure.

The Saabaru took 4.7, but that wasn't a 2.5, just the old 2.0 turbo.

Do anyone know why the 2.0L dipstick is so much longer than either of the 2.5L dipsticks? Is this due to a deeper pan geometry or does the top of the dipstick tube sit higher above the engine?

We sell a fair amount of the STI Oil Pans.

The reason that the the 2.0 dip stick is longer is because the 2.0 pan does not have the cut-out for the equal length headers like the STI pan does, so the oil level is lower. That is why the dip-stick is longer.

As has been said, the 2.0 pan does have a higher capacity compared to the 2.5 pan. Capacity of the 2.0 pan is 4.8 quarts, and the 2.5 pan is 4.3 quarts.

    Hope that helps.

This should muddy the waters, this is just what I had laying about. All dipsticks are held at the same spot on the other end by a straight edge BTW.

Killer B told me that their pan is usable with the 05 and 06+ dipsticks. With both sticks it has (at least) 6 qts when it hits the full mark. The 06+ stick should have slightly more as the stick is shorter, thus oil height is higher.

is your straight edge on the end of the handles or the stop for insertion?

This is where 5 qts puts the oil level with my 05 wrx dipstick and my # 151 STI pan
