The Exhaust Thread- Post your Pics & Knowledge

First things first a mini-rant. I love the forums and is a great resource for us builders to share our success's and failures but keeping all this information in a build thread is not the best way to share for future reference and makes it hard to find. I wanted to create this thread to make it easy to search for specific topics and prevent someone from saying "I already shared that in my build thread that is 25 pages long, go find it". I feel better now.

There have been many requests to see an exhaust setup that had both a cat and a muffler and wanted to show what "we" came up with.

This is full stainless 3" exhaust utilizing a Kinugawa bell mouth, 3" high flow spun Magnaflow cat and a 3" in/out 5" diameter Magnaflow race muffler.

I sourced a wreck-mangled COBB downpipe and cut the bellmouth and cat off of it. I welded those close together then reduced it to 2.5" and used an exhaust donut to turn the exhaust back up and over into a C6 corvette muffler. I extended one of the tips so the tip stagger follows the curve of the rear bumper. For brackets, I used the FFR clamp bracket mounted to the transmission as shown, and used an FFR seat bracket I didn't need to create a crane like bracket for the muffler tail end which hangs on rubber donuts. The sound is similar to stock, should breathe much better. The donut extends into a gap in the frame. The O2 sensor points downward near the right half shaft. I'm happy with it. "Custome" here on the forums finished the welding for me. I can tack weld now. But not much more without creating a mess which CustomE will attest to, lol. Good idea for a thread.

My bellmouth came from my ej207, it's a wider mouth and different bolt pattern than the Usdm ones. Than to a custom shaped below rear facia center exit. I also made my setup with an interchangeable flange so I can change out different designs
2.5" 304 stainless tubing and 308l and 309 filler material used ( 309 was for steel bellmouth to 304 tubing)

Heres mine, with a SS bell mouth, hi flow cat, and a Magnaflow full size muffler:

    Exhaust.jpg

Sounds good, with a nice rumble and a good amount of burble. Next is the aftermarket UEL headers and up-pipe!

Not much room left for the boot, or trunk in US speak!

Nice thinking outside the box! Tough to find space for a cat and muffler.

For those of you that don't have the resources to create you own, we have many option available. We are currently working on a system that exits under the diffuser. Check out some option at

That's what I've been looking for. I can fab up something on my own with my brother's welding help but would rather just buy a good option from someone. Needs to have a bellmouth and a cat or muffler (or both) and no visible exit (or side exit).

I'm surprised nobody is doing a high centre exit exhaust like the GTM. Maybe it's the fear of burning people.

Here is my side exit, all 3 inch stainless, bellmouth with O2 sensor bung for wideband, down into 3 inch high flow Flowmaster CAT, 90 degree 3 inch turn with O2 sensor bung, 3 inch oval muffler, exits low in the rear corner behind the tire.

    P1120261.JPG P1120237.JPG P1120236.JPG

The entire assembly is low enough for a generous trunk, I'll be adding a lightweight aluminum shield over the entire exhaust. I'm also planning some protection for the rear clip's fiberglass with an aluminum shield. I have about 2 inches of clearance to the inner wheel well

Made one with Cat & second one with Muffler...Interchangeable.

    I have gone simple...so far.

First was with stock downpipe. A bit too noisy for my everyday comfort.

Second with muffler Loud enough, but the very sharp "crack" noise is gone and it is much more agreeable when cruising.

They are interchangeable, so if I need/want the cat back in...no more than 15 minutes and it is done.

I finished my exhaust recently and though I'd share... I used a Kinugawa Turbo Bellmouth, FlowMaster Super 10 Muffler and two pieces of 3" 304 Stainless tubing. I bought a bracket from Mike to support the tailpipe. I polished the end of it, and it will be trimmed to length when the body is on and finished off with one of Mike's Aluminum GTM trim rings. I also have Craig's turbo heatshield installed (and may add a blanket and wrap). I took it to RPM (Richard's Performance Muffler) in Oceanside, CA to TIG the bellmouth to the elbow pipe and put the O2 bung in; I'm no welder, but it looks like nice work to me. The Flowmaster is just clamped and sealed in. I don't need a cat, and I expect it to be fairly loud.

I'm planning the high center exit exhaust. Has anybody come across a bellmouth that doesn't have the downward curve?

Setting it up for the high center exit means I don't need it to turn downward out of the turbo. Ideally it would be a large funnel shape down to 3" sticking straight off the turbo.

*Also - I agree with your mini rant.*

I like the first one (coloskydyver)... I just couldn't find the parts to fit inline at 3 inch with a cat and muffler, both are required to register here in Maine. I think with a little tweaking anyone can fit what they need, there is a ton of unused space in the basic 818 design. A "blank canvas" so to speak. I'd have some video etc but when my wiring didn't work at restart I sent it out to be done properly by IWire... I'll be running again in the spring.

I have that same exhaust on my 818 but with a 3" high flow cat. Its actually really nice, not too loud, no drone and just the perfect amount of sweet H4 boxer sounds coming through

you have a magnaflow PN for your cat? its so much shorter than my flowmaster... I like that you got them all lined up and didn't need the 90 bend!

I recently finished mine. Ceramic coated, 02 Bung, $4 trim ring from McMaster Carr. I had to throw a little "S" in mine to clear the 818R wing mount bar.

That sounds great. Very smooth and not raspy. Where are you planning your exit? Side of the rear bumper right behind the tire?

Sounds killer! You should weld in a flex section. My exhaust is has pretty much the same routing and ends up rubbing at the bumper cutout from the engine torque under acceleration. I will be adding one shortly.

    Heres mine.

I bought the *gulp* AJW Exhaust

It fits great, was only $175, sounds awesome, and is in a good spot for center exit.

I cut the stock WRX down pipe into two pieces, inserted a flexible exhaust section I picked up from Advance Auto, and bent the FFR-supplied bracket to route the exhaust out the back. I trimmed and attached the FFR exhaust tip. I like the look without the mesh, so this is the way it's going to stay.

    Cost of added parts: Flex-o-pipe - $8.49, exhaust clamp - $3.49 for a total of $11.98.

The flex pipe and clamps are rusting, but they match the rust on the stock down pipe (I cut off the heat shield completely), and I like the utilitarian look. Of course, no one sees it unless I pop the cover anyway. It includes the catalytic converter, but no muffler. It isn't too loud when I take it easy on the throttle so I can get in and out of the neighborhood without raising to much of a ruckus. It still sounds great when I punch it!

I used the AJW exhaust, and VRaptor louvers and vents. The AJW exhaust is off center (vertically) but it still turned out OK, was not worth the hassle or cutting and welding the exhaust to get it centered vertically

Ultra-cheap and reasonably loud exhaust made of cut donor WRX downpipe. The flexible extension reduces tip motion if/when the motor rocks.

Since this is the Exhaust thread, I'll post this link to the Boig system that I think looks like the best, at least for me, and maybe others. I'll buy the most quiet configuration and then patch or disguise the hole on the side of my 818S that holds my current exhaust.

    Another idea for exhaust routing

I have purchased a catless exhaust down pipe off of ebay and cut out a section that allowed me to weld in a muffler. It came out quite clean as you can see from the pics. Pipe exits out the corner of the rear fascia. The hanger bracket was hardware store special with some bending required.

Did you use a hammer to get the bellmouth to fit? I really wanted to use a pre-built cast bellmouth but they all curve down too quickly, and arent round enough to accept a round exhaust pipe until the very end.
