    Rear End Redesign

Starting a new thread to continue the discussion of possible styling changes to the rear bumper and tail lights. Link to Mechie3 thread is attached if you would like to see where this stemmed from

This photo here is what inspired me and what i will be looking at imitating

Per your request in "Mechie's- I just design stuff and will never finish my car thread" I bought these from amazon for a 3rd brake light. Super bright.

Oooh I like. I just want to make my rear end wider. The whole car for that matter. I like a big car like the GTR

I just got a flexible LED strip off eBay and I'm going to try to make a flush-mount 3rd brake light. I hope to mount a piece of plexiglass in the bumper and silicone the strip to the inside surface of it.

My thought was to create the rear end like Vman envisioned. With his design, it would create a recess for the tail lights. The lights would be placed in similar orientation to the photos. To create the lense, i thing i would use a sheet of smoked lexan cut to fit the recess and glue it in.

Im using a front mount in a rear mounted setup, I plan on ducting air from large side scoops that i will also build and duct it towards the IC. IC and the center area will be painted black to "hide" the IC setup.

License plate will be down in front of the transmission.

Exhaust will exit out of the side and have the "trim" as in the photo.

Any idea on where to place the reverse lights? I was thinking the bottom inner of the lexan lenses. Thoughts?

It might be just me but the vertical/diagonal tail light strips, against the black background, and especially with the round exhaust in the center makes it look like the back of a modern Mustang.

That said, I do like a lot of these design ideas and am looking forward to more. I might implement some myself if I find something that looks great and is simple, but more likely than not, I will probably just play with color.

I like that Larry, what did you use, how did you mount it in the spoiler? Is your spoiler the fiberglass one or CF?

I have the fiberglass one. It will get painted orange to match the rest of the trim on the car.

The row of LED's is this: http://www.vellemanusa.com/products/view/?id=524090

It is 18 LED's mounted to a thin flexible circuit board. I just determined the curve I wanted and traced it on the spoiler then drilled 18 holes the appropriate distance apart along the line. I made the holes for the LED's a little oversized to account for primer and paint.

I'll 3D print some spacers so the LED's sit flush with the surface of the spoiler then either epoxy or double stick tape it into place.

You need to order a minimum of 100 pieces, but with prices of $.1 to $3/pc it's only $300, then you can sell the rest.

I've been working on these for a few days and was about to roll them out when I saw this new thread. The single strip taillight was an idea I brought up a while back, so I didn't steal anyone's ideas. It's missing a few things and exhaust will exit out the passenger side.

Just keep one functional, with the others for looks....LOL.

EDIT: oh, didn't enlarge the photo at first and I thought each had a center pipe, making my comment even more silly than I was intending. Anyhow, do the multiple pipes change the exhaust note at all or would they only be for looks?

That vertical section you added really changes the look of the rear (for the better, IMO).

I agree. The current edge detail will be retained and transferred to the new body line.

After looking at my rear bumper even closer, the whole surface around the tail lights is covered in spider cracks. It would've required removal of gel coat regardless and doing this modification is easily justified

Just a handful of quick photoshops. I looked down and...surprise...it's already 11:15pm. My wife said today "I'm going to bed, your turn to watch the baby and be tired". I said "I already am tired". She replied "well, it's your own fault you stay up late". I blame the forum. haha! I'm not sure I like these or not. My ability to make straight lines freehand in photoshop is bad, and I don't know it well enough to know how to setup geometric shapes as a guide that limit the paintbrush stroke automatically so that certainly doesn't help. I like the blue one, but that entire rear bumper is different. I'm still exploring "remove" only designs before going the "add material" route.

I think the fender modifications are a must for me now. Gotta say tho, the round tail lights dont look all that bad. LED strips have been ordered already. Ill see how they mock up before i go a different route.

Based on this source it looks like SAE standard states a maximum of 300 lumens (cd) and 750 lumens (cd) for red and yellow (respectively) "rear signals":
    https://law.resource.org/pub/us/cfr/...1395.1985.html

I'm assuming the "rear signals" are just the turn signals, not the brake lights. Couldn't find a free source for brake lights, but apparently it's in SAE J1330?....

These are mostly what I am looking for. I don't think Amazon US will allow any Canadian to buy these (I have to add to cart and check), but they don't sell them on the Canadian website. I could not find them on ebay as well. Google doesn't give much either. Worst case I can pay someone from US to buy and ship to me.

They are on Lemonbest's website, but at 13.29 a set of 2 instead of 9.99 on Amazon. Not a big difference though. Not sure Lemon sells outside USA either.

    http://www.lemonbest.com/2pcs-17cm-l...waterproof-12v

You guys from the US are super lucky people! You can get anything anywhere anytime for a super cheap price and usually free shipping.

EDIT: Nope, Amazon does not sell these outside USA.

I totally agree. Ive already ordered the lights Chad posted . Total of 6 are on their way.

For the reverse light, i was thinking a 3"x4" LED, similar to a fog/tail light that the European cars have but mounted next to the license plate. Only one. You can kind of see it drawn out. Its going to have to go on the passenger side due to the shifting cables in the way.

I think you may be able to achieve a similar result by covering the LEDs with an opaque strip of lexan. Perhaps sand one side of a sheet of lexan with a fine grit orbital sander, cut to fit and enjoy the light distribution.

Uhm, I can't figure out about Chad's Lemonbest rods if they are SAE/DOT compliant. I just realized going through my stupid vehicle regulation documents that I need lights that are SAE/DOT compliant. I also need front-rear reflectors that are compliant as well. I'll ask Lemonbest, as this is Canada-driven and anyone in Canada will need compliant lights.

You only need compliant lights for inspection.

An F1 style reverse light would be good, though finding one in white is hard, most are red. I was going to put a strip of white leds centered and high on the little lip of the trunk.

Yes and no. loll I mean yes for sure for inspection, so I could do inspection with the FFR rear end and change it afterwards.
But the no is IF, only IF, a cop tails me, has some doubts about the lights, checks them closely and doesn't see SAE on them, he/she can send me to inspection. So then what do I do, if I can't put back somehow the FFR rear end and tell the inspector I just changed it back, I'm screwed. I have to think of a switchable rear end.

You laugh that this possibility is one out of 1 billion, I agree, but I got tailed 18 years ago for something most of the people don't respect and never get checked for and I had to fix it. Rare cars attract cops, here. So I have to think of all the possibilities and be safe.
