    Is It Big Enough?

    Ok, you guys/gals are probably going to laugh at this!

    Thought I would post a pic or two of the air cleaner I am planning on using. Will be testing on the dyno next month.

    Yes that's a Mendeola S5 gearbox next to the air cleaner to show scale.

    Yes with the enclosure it will be even bigger.

    Yes that's a 7" outlet.

    Yes this air cleaner came from a large tractor application.

    Yes this borders on the obscene and I am laughing right along with you.

    Remember, I want something that will not only flow well when new and clean, but will flow well when 50% clogged from going "off roading" during a 25 hour long race where changing the filter isn't an option.

    Not sure, you might need to run a y-pipe with twin filters!

    What engine are you building? I see what appears to be a SBC head casting in that photo?

    Mmmmm...dry sump. Good to see you are building an LS engine over an older small block. I wonder if anyone has tried a carbureted motor, or LT series Chev? Probably not, but a carb'd LS would be a nice spin from the norm.

    Believe it or not, the team I worked on was the first one to develop FI on a Trans-Am car and podium with it. From that experience I can say that while I like the carb for HP/TQ in actual DRIVING performance, the milage of FI is very important in the endurance racing and you just won't get that with the carb. Also "modes" can be selected on throttle reponse when using DBW and this also helps milage greatly. If I was building a sprint racer, I would definitely use the carb, but with the endurance focus, the FI is the call. The FI is also IMHO safer.

    FFR2100 - 331 with KB supercharger - T5 - 5 link rear 3.08's and T2 Torsen.

    Well, it's all based on flow rates at a particular specified vacuum, and believe it or not, this is what is called for. Also, it should be noted that I am calcualting at 50-75% of efficiency rates due to assumed clogging from "off road" events that absolutely take place during a 25 hour long event.

    Technically speaking, could you not increase the intake plenum size to reduce the
    required flow@pressure to allow a smaller filter area?

    Now that doesn't cure the debris issue for off-roading, but it would probably increase
    the power numbers for the engine (mainly at higher RPM, and for larger cube motors in
    general).

    It's a bit more work, but I've always wanted to build an aluminum intake for the LS
    motor and slap on a nice throttle blade. Going further, is there any benefit to making
    a spilt manifold and using twin throttle blades (for isolating wave interference)?

    A little off topic, but something I plan to research and build for the project. There are
    quite a few motors that use long runner, dual plenum designs ... I wonder how the
    Chev's respond to such a configuration?

    P.S. I want credit if anyone goes this route!

    This engine is being built for low end torque and longevity. Rev limiter is at 6500.

    If you go the dual plenum and dual throttle body, you can do this drive by wire with a computer such as the one I am using. A Life Racing F88.

    I believe the Katech GM factory LS engines use the long runner dual plenum design.
