Will the engine from a 1996 mustang work in the coupe ?
The '96 Mustang is technically not an appropriate donor for the Coupe (which uses '87-'93 donors), but if you're willing to make some changes, you can make it work.
Here's what you'd want to consider:
- The engine is too tall to fit under the hood without cutting a section out and raising that section to make room
- The engine is too wide for the existing Coupe footbox aluminum, but I'm pretty sure you only need to replace the LH footbox inner vertical wall and the top cover that attaches to it (this is what we do for a Mk4 Roadster as well)
- You'll need to use stock exhaust manifolds or shorty headers like we do in the Mk4 and then make some sort of intermediate pipe like our J-Pipes to connect out to the Coupe side pipes - be sure to install oxygen sensor ports in these also
- You'll want to be careful not to choose too large of a transmission
One good thing to note is that this install has been done a few times - I know there's a guy in Sweden who did it, and I've heard of a couple in the States, too. I'm going to check around a little further and make sure I'm not forgetting anything important, and I'll try to get some photos to post along with this.
Hope that helps!

Thanks Jason, will the engine mounts be ok ? I see Tim Potts put one in and had no clearance issue, the tranny is stock from the mustang. I remember you giving me a tour 3 years ago when I picked up my MK III roadster.

I just posted some 4.6L install info on my blog in the link above.
