Last weekend was round 2 of the Western Endurance Racing Championship and the Mendeola Transaxles FFR PDG GTM scored another win! It was a hard fought victory for the team and driver Carl Rydquist battling Truspeed's GT3 Cup Porsche for 3 hours straight.
We made some shock and tire pressure changes and dropped 2 seconds a lap from practice to qualifying. Carl qualified on pole by almost 5 seconds over the rest of the field as we snuck in a decent lap on lap two of qualifying and then there was an incident that brought out the clearing of the course and qualifying was essentially over. Truspeed qualified at a 1:55 to our 1:50, but Truspeed had run a 1:47 in practice, so we knew they would be coming for us in the race.
At race start Carl pulled away as Truspeed had their #2 driver in and ended up lapping them after about an hour of racing. Troy Lindstrom's Super Truck was lurking, waiting for errors by both us and Truspeed, but those would not come.
Truspeed had a pretty fast 3 minute pit stop where they changed drivers, tires, and fueled, but it still put them 3 laps down to us before our pit stop.
We had a great pit stop dumping 25 gallons of fuel into the GTM in 40 seconds and when we came out of the pits Truspeed was only able to pick up 1 lap, so they were still down two laps.
You wouldn't have known it though by the way they were driving as they were running HARD and Carl just tried to keep pace, which he did...right on their rear bumper!
When the checkered flag fell we were two laps up on the Porsche, but he was about 2 seconds ahead of us, so he got another lap back at the checkered flag, but we still won, officially, by over a lap.
Great competition, great weather, and a great outcome. We really couldn't have asked for anything more and are looking pretty good now with 2 wins in the books and 4 races in the series left to go.
