    Coolant Overflow placement...

    Just saw some pics of a Canton overflow mounted on the X-frame member... well below the coolant system high point. I have been under the impression that the top of the overflow had to be at (or above) the fill tube and radiator top. Mayhaps I have been misinformed. Mounting the tank would be MUCH simpler if height is not a problem. Thanks,

    Since the tank does not work using gravity but pressure differential location should not be a big deal, IMO.

    Here is what I did ...

    I used the Moroso tank .... and it is mounted slightly lower than the outlet from the engine. While I have not had it on the road yet ... I have gone through several cycles of the engine and go cart without any issues.



    Shined up and installed the Moroso overflow tank;

    Mine is about the same height as Carls. Been working great for 3 years now. While there may be a limit as to how far the suction vacuum can pull coolant up hill, this location is well within the capability.
    FFR MkII, 408W, Tremec TKO 500, 2015 IRS, DA QA1s, Forte front bar, APE hardtop.

    Zero issues with the overflow tank placement on the X-member or F-panel as in the pictures I posted on the other thread. The Canton Racing tank on the X-member in my Mk3 had sight tubes on the side, so it was real easy to see it was working just like it was supposed to. The slightly smaller Moroso tank on my Mk4 also works fine. Both cars have been on the road for multiple seasons with no issues. As stated, for an overflow of this type, it's pressure not gravity. Within reason, they work fine.

    Thanks Turn Two, I was thinking about those same issues. My other concern was if it would begin to siphon off coolant when the tank was full. I don't believe that will be an issue since the coolant will stop flowing at the cap once the engine pressure has stabilized with the release of coolant. I am thinking that once the excess coolant is released from the overflow tank and out of the system there will be sufficient coolant in the tank to allow for the expansion and contraction without further loss. Does that make sense to you guys?

    That's exactly what happens. With the 2-qt tank, it stabilized at about 3/4 full when hot and 1/4 when cool. It's easy to see in the sight tube.

    To siphon coolant OUT of the engine it would need to pull 16# of vacuum to get past your 16# pressure cap. I am sure gravity can't do that.
