WTB: Subaru EZ36R, low mileage engine, complete lift out

I just got my 818R kit and like a few others on the forum I am looking to go H6 NA for a power plant. Problem I am having now is finding a descent, low mileage, complete EZ36R. All the JDM importers I contacted only had EZ30 motors. I can find high mileage motors locally but I am looking for something with less than 50k.

Any body have any tips on where to look?

The problem I have found with car-part.com and other dismantlers is that they only want to sell you the long block. No accessories, intake and exhaust manifolds, coil packs, wiring etc... are not typically included. Since I do not have an engine to start with all those bits are important and $$$ to source separately.

"Lift out" motors typically come complete, even with the ECU sometimes!

Call Dave at Scott's in Colorado. 970-498-0662 You'll want to know what make and model you want the 3.6R out of (Tribeca vs. Outback). He will gladly sell you a complete swap. Expect to pay a bit more for a later model Outback version, and the price is going to reflect the accessories included as well as condition and mileage. If you can arrange a business with a dock or forklift you'll save yourself some money too.

Last thing, once you have the motor and everything I'm not sure what your plans are for engine control BUT AEM just so happens to have the base calibration for that engine so you could easily go with an Infinity and a harness from iWire for a very powerful ECU and simple install.

I'm sure I'll find an engine eventually. I'm building the car as an open track "fun" car. No racing series and class rules to deal with

The 818R will be replacing my Lotus Elise as my track day toy.

Keep in mind the only true track-racer using the EZ series that I'm aware of blew his engine very quickly due to oiling issues. And there no aftermarket oil pans or dry sump systems for the EZs. That's why I eliminated it from consideration for a NA race car build.

I do remember reading that and it does give me pause, but somebody has to try this combo out. Any changes I make to the chassis will still allow a swap back to my donor's 06 WRX EJ255 should the H6 not work out as well as I hope.

Also researching EZ setups. Care to share any notes? I just got started and most of the threads I've found are 3 years old and full of speculation.

There are multiple threads here on people building 818's with EZ motors. There are three models to pick from EZ30D first gen, EZ30D second gen (often referred to as EZ30R) and EZ36D (almost always referred to as EZ36R).

Easiest to install is the EZ30D first gen. Both the EZ30R and EZ36R require frame or motor mount modifications to fit but have higher performance. I found an EZ36R on nasioc.
