    Oil Cooler

My winter 818 project will include rebuilding my 2.0 turbo and some modding. I would like to add an engine oil cooler. I would also like to delete the subie "oil/water separator" as the water hoses are prone to leaking and I don't believe that the device provides any oil cooling. Is there a way to completely remove the unit and replace with an oil delivery block? The available kits appear to have the delivery block added onto the separator.

I'm not sure what the delivery block is - but on my 2.5, the oil filter could screw right on to the engine block. Mocal makes a spacer block, and also a sandwich plate with a thermostat built in. What I used on mine was a spacer block for a Subaru BRZ (from Mocal), and the mocal sandwich plate. There are pics in my build thread. This allowed me to eliminate the oil warmer and run an air to air external oil cooler. I capped the coolant lines with silicone caps.

I guess by delivery block I mean the sandwich plate. Also, what cooler did you use, where did you mount it?

Its a heat exchanger, not an oil heater.

I removed all the subaru oil heater/filter/spacer stuff, to take it all the way down to the block. I then got this: http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/p...andwich_Plates

    Oil cooler is Setrab: http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/c...ab_Oil_Coolers

Personally, I mounted mine in the back flat next to the transmission with a SPAL FAN on a thermostat. At some future point, I will be moving it to the area behind the left side scoop, and building a manifold that captures 100% of the air from the side scoop and forces it through the oil cooler. The fan works fine on the street, zero oil cooling issues, but on the track it can't keep up. The fan probably pulls 10-20mph of air through the cooler.... nothing like the 100+mph air you get on the track.

I have pics of my complete setup in my build thread including the plates, hoses and fittings, and rear cooler + fan and shroud setup.

Hindsight: Any preference between the #8 or #10 fittings offered for the sandwich plate? Is either better for "push on" type hoses that I can make up myself?

I haven't use push-lock hoses. I know people who have but I don't trust them with my oil pressure. AN fittings have been used for decades and are proven. I used -10AN fittings and hoses for everything.

Since you are on the topic, what kind of oil pressures are you getting and what oil pump are you running, any oil pump shims?

I was running 91 psi at cold engine 1250 rpm.

I have stock 10mm, 85 PSI relief valve in my oil pump.

Cold I run over 100 PSI (as gauge only goes to 100), after 30 min of running at moderate rate the pressure was at 70 at idle, on track pressure did not go below 80. I believe I'm running a 11mm pump (stock JDM EJ207v7). I still have the stock oil heat exchanger installed along with a oil cooler.

I have the same setup and results as Bob. Not sure about the pressure relief valve in my oil pump though, but it's whatever is stock for an 07 WRX. I haven't changed anything.

Here are the hot pressures and relief valves pressures that someone on here posted a while back.

WE had the 11mm in our first engine, over 100 cold, always 90+ at speed.....except that one time, in a corner, we don't know when.

We now have the 12mm cosworth in our backup engine, so we will see.

Please make sure you plumb through the filter to the cooler, then to the bearings. Im paying the price now for not getting my plumbing right the first time.

Doesn't the sandwich plate dictate, by design, the direction of oil flow?

What do you mean by "mix up the hoses"? There is no inlet or outlet to my cooler.
