Crank Shaft Bolt Removal

Hi Guys,

I'm hoping that title gets what I'm looking for. I had a wicked time removing the six bolts that hold the flywheel or flex plate on. Bought the tool and broke three of them. Were they installed with Lock Tight? Do you need to heat them first? Is there a factory tool different from what you get at the hardware store?

If I recall correctly, I took a piece of steel bar, drilled a hole in each end, bolted one end to the flywheel using a pressure plate bolt and bolted the other end to the engine case using a transmission-to-engine mounting bolt. That locks the flywheel from turning (cheap DIY flywheel lock). Then just loosen the flywheel to crank bolts with an impact or a breaker bar with a cheater pipe if needed.

The "Star" keys were all breaking on me. Do you have to get something special to remove them?

You must have a different year than I do - with different bolt styles. Pretty sure I just used a 6 or 12 point socket on mine. I googled it and see that some years apparently came with a different style bolt head that takes a bit. If you are breaking bits..... I would heat the bolts up with map gas. If that failed, then in addition to heating them up, I would put your bit on an impact screwdriver and wail on them with a heavy hammer (gives it the shock force that often cracks things loose that otherwise breaks tools when trying to apply high torque): http://www.homedepot.com/p/TEKTON-3-...word=205674679
