    Which mechanical fuel pump do you recommend?

    I have been doing a bit of research on fuel pumps. Mechanical vs electric mainly. I have decided to stick with the mechanical pump. I have been reading that some people have issues with edelbrocks and holleys leaking oil. Can anyone recommend a part number or place to purchase a good reliable pump? If it can be purchased locally i would prefer to go that route. I'm running a 351w pushing around 400hp.

    I've used aluminum Edelbrock mechanical fuel pumps on my two SBF builds. Both are still running to this day. Other than a total screw-up on my part overtightening one of the mounting bolts and cracking the flange, I've had no issues. The instructions clearly say "don't overtighten" but I did anyway. Lesson = price of a new fuel pump.

    Doesn't exactly make sense the fuel pump would leak oil. There's no oil in the pump itself. Must have been the seal between the pump and the timing cover? Just a normal paper gasket and proper torque on the bolts. (see prior paragraph) There's oil inside the timing cover but it's not high pressure. Shouldn't be an issue.

    What I have read was leaking through the weep holes at the top... I'll make sure to tourqe to specs!!

    I started with a Carter mechanical, then during a rebuild changed to a Edelbrock Victor. Both good, no problems with either. 427 SBF with mid-500hp. About 55k miles between the two. I've run an Aeromotive bypass regulator with both but it wasn't necessary with the Carter pump.

    I used an Edelbrock on a carbed customer car (probably the same pump Paul had on his). The owner is at 20ish thousand miles now with no issues.

    There is a diaphragm that prevents fuel from going into the block when the fuel pump diaphragm breaks the fuel runs out the hole. When that one breaks first oil runs out the hole.

    Be sure to get one that says it is clockable. I got a Summit brand w/ that feature and rotating it one hole helped a lot w/ hose runs.

    Edelbrock Performer RPM 1725 I used in #7750 (and one of the ones I was referencing in my earlier post) is clockable. I think it's a pretty common feature on aftermarket pumps. But doesn't hurt to check. BTW, didn't have to change mine. Stock orientation as installed. Visible in the lower RH corner of this pic.

    edwardb, did you use custom cut plug wires? I like how neat your engine compartment is. Also what size fuel lines do you have run to and from the pump (the braided stainless)

    Yes. That build was Taylor uncut plug wires, cut and terminated to fit. Fuel lines are -6AN braided stainless.

    Thanks. Being that I have a crate motor comming I'm pretty sure it will be standard wires. I will probably remove them and cut them to the proper length. I just need to come of with a neat way of running them.

    I'm one of those who had an Edlebrock fail early by leaking oil. Edelbrock told me the engine was so new it had too much compression and blew the seal. I'm not sure if that is the case or not. My builder sent me a new one (because it was only like 500 miles old) and the new one has been ok since, but not tons of miles yet. Keeping my fingers crossed...
