If it is the older style IRS (not the 2015 Mustang) they are held in with spring clips and are removed by prying between the pumpkin and axle hub. Some don't release easily so expect to have to pry with force. I don't recall having a left/right axle so am not sure how the wrong axle was installed. If you have the 2015 IRS, someone else may be able to help.

2015's are the same way. Don't beat on it. Just a pry bar between the pumpkin and the axle hub. It should pop right out. I had a full pallet 2015 IRS for my build, and had to remove the stock axles.

Try two pry bars. On opposite sides of each other.

After whacking mine hard for a few hours, and trying one pry bar I had no luck. I tried two, and they came out very easily with little to no force.
