Hood scoop

I dont want to rivet the hood scoop on to the car. Is the best way to "marry" the hood and the scoop together is to use fiberglass?

Exactly. Not wise to mix dissimilar materials. Put up a "want to buy" in the classifieds to see if any early Mk4 owners have one they didn't use.

Is there any difference in durability, riveted versus bonded? Wondering if paint cracks might eventually develop at the rivet locations. I suppose the same thing could happen at the bond line, but it seems more likely to happen around the edges of the rivet heads, no?

I like the riveted look, but paint cracks not so much.

Can't say if rivets would cause cracks. Don't use them. Instead used button head SS screws with fiber washers and acorn nuts on the inside. Got the idea from other builds on the forum. Pretty common approach I think. Look like rivets, sort of. Tighten them just enough to pull the scoop onto the hood. No sign of paint or cracking after several years.

I think your concern about rivets cracking the scoop is valid. Even the aluminum mandrels pull pretty darn tight. A rivet washer on both sides would help but then you have a huge thing to look at.

I never use rivets, always chrome or stainless buttonheads like Paul described (nylocks rather than acorns but that decision is simply a matter of personal preference).

I just did a fiberglass one I got at Tony Branda , it is narrower then the plastic and since my hood was already cut I had to half it and make it wider, it turned out nice.
