Back-up Light suggestion

Need a DOT approved light, I see the mini cooper ones, but kinda of pricey, any suggestions ?

I went to Autozone and picked up a backup light kit that goes on a trailer hitch. It's rectangular, has a glass lens and a halogen lamp. They come in pairs, but I only used one centered on the body. Very happy with the way it turned out.

I am not that far along, but have been thinking about what style to install. Right now, I think I will use one of the tag brackets with back up lights incorporated into it. I will have a wiring harness going in the same area for the tag light.
I do not know if the TKO 600 has accommodations for neutral switch and back up lights. I might just put them on a toggle switch if not.

It has both. Discussed and illustrated in this thread. Off topic, but the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) port shown in this thread must have a bolted on cover when not used. Not just the rubber plug that is shipped with the transmission.

The TKO-600 does have a neutral safety switch and a reverse light switch. Although I don't think it's DOT, this is what I did. It passed the Calif. light check I had done a couple months ago.

Make sure it clearly states DoT on the lens, or it could fail the inspection. Something made for a trailer is your best bet for low cost and DoT approved. Keep it simple, and use double stick tape on the plastic tank cover. Afterwards, you can remove it, and put in whatever you want.

I wanted to keep the classic look...

This what I did back in '09, I used a super cheap Autozone light with DOT number and attached it to my quick jacks for the NYS Field Inspection. Once it passed, I then removed it and rewired to much nicer, brighter and hidden ones mounted on the each rear elephant ears.



You can just see a bit of one the driver-side.

I put super bright LEDs on my license plate frame. Not DOT but passed PA inspection. When they are off they blend into the frame and are not noticeable.20150812_172845.jpg

Another option I have seen is an LED strip that has both white and red lights that can serve as both back up and center brake light. These attach to the license plate as well20160313_130912.jpg20160313_130925.jpg

Considering the architecture of the '60's I am planning on using the rectangular back-up lights from a '66 VW Beetle and mount them below the rear nerf bars. ( build # 8415) - still trying .

My backup light is a Hella LED light running straight from switched power, thru the TKO600 switch, then thru the light to ground and hung from the trunk aluminum by a simple horseshoe strap. First pic is taken from a low angle, so the backup light is more obvious than what you see in real life:
