The Factory Five telephone hold playlist

Last week I had to call FFR to order a replacement headlamp. Which, although off topic, is proof once more that one should not attempt to install headlamps at 2:00 a.m. after several barleypops.

Anyway, I was on hold for a bit, and as usual got some really great tunes to listen to. They're always car related. There was one a while ago, maybe a year, where the lyrics were just "bucket seats, bucket seats" and it sounded like a punkish band, but I've searched high and low and can't find it on iTunes.

SO, my question is...who gets the enviable task of creating the list? And is there any chance you'd post a list of the ones you remember here on this thread? When I make my build video, I want "bucket seats" to be part of it.

Thanks ladies and germs, and KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!

    AJ

    Hi AJ,

Glad you're enjoying the songs we play for our on hold music. I created the playlist and we're playing it on my iPod. I'll try and grab it in a few minutes (figure out another option for some on hold music temporarily) and post the list of all the songs we play. It's around 40 songs I think.

Here you go guys...the Factory Five On Hold Playlist:

If you have any other songs that are clean in terms of language (pretty sure these songs are fairly clean, but haven't listened to the in a bit), post them to this thread and I'll add them. Already downloading the rest of that Cake album. I had the track Race Car Ya-Yas off of that album, amongst other Cake records, but not the whole thing.

Still not sure which track you are looking for, but it has to be one of those. Hope this list helps you find it.

It's cool to see the full list - I think I've heard most of those over the last couple of years (usually when holding to place a parts order - that reminds me; gotta call about that oil cooler I've been wanting to order). I always have to smile, though, when I hear "One Piece at a Time" by Johnny Cash. That one just seems to fit the FFR constructor.

Here are a few additional suggestions for your list:

Hey Little Cobra - Rip Chords (yeah... I know, I know....)

Runnin' Down a Dream - Tom Petty

    Good Directions - Billy Currington

Thanks for the suggestions...we decided, after recent events, to not include the Rip Chords song. Good tune though, but we opted to not include it for reasons we all know.

This thread alone proves that FFR is one of the Great American Companies (tm).

Anyone who considers and edits the hold musics gets 3 big thumbs up in my book.

Sweet...iTunes store here I come...after 5 o'clock that is. Thanks for the suggestions guys. We've been talking about refreshing the playlist a little.

Question: Do you guys find the volume of the on-hold music too loud? I know each track might be mastered differently creating some volume change, and I've tried a few things to help try and turn the volume down, but curious if anyone else has found it to be too loud.

Volume's been fine. I can't wait to hear the new playlist - guess I'll have to wait a few days before ordering that oil cooler kit.

Alright, I had a few of the suggestions already in my library and downloaded the rest. I'm going to give them a quick listen and will update the iPod with the new playlist soon. It's going to contain all the tracks posted above too so it's a pretty good playlist.

Glad to read the volume is acceptable. I'd love to crank it up but because we have had a few reports of it being loud, I think we'll leave it as is.

    Hi everyone,

I've listened to all the recommendations and added most of them. So, here's the updated playlist. I'll add a link to a larger image of the list. Just did screen grabs off of the list in iTunes.

Click here to see a larger version of the image.

If you have more tracks in mind, post them and I'll look into adding them to the list.

I kinow I'm betraying my age, but the "Ballad of Thunder Road" by Robert Mitchum belongs on any car nut list. You'll probably need a 78 RPM player to listen to it.

    Dave,

Check out "Switchblade 327" by Brian Setzer (post-Stray Cats days; sometime in the last '90s). I totally forgot about this one and came across it on a CD while on a roadtrip this past weekend.

    What's a 78rpm player?

    KIDDING!!!

Believe it or not I still have a collection of vinyl and my Kenwood direct drive table. It's sad when I've had my kid's friends in the house and ask what it was!

Pretty sure this has been posted before, but it's still amazing. This guys vinyl collection is unbelievable. And friends think my DVD collection is a lot (approaching 1,400), but I know they won't hold the value that some of these records have.

In light of the recent car movie thread, I thought I'd bring back this old thread regarding FFR's car-song hold music playlist.

What are your favorite car / roadtrip songs?????

    Dave,

Go here --> http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/download.php (pick the top file) if you need software to "normalize volume" on the playlist - re-codes all MP3 files to play at same volume - I used it for On-Hold music in telephone systems I used to babysit in Vegas casinos . . .

Well I started going through my mp3s and you cant skip -

Booker t and the mg's - green onions (also by Tom Petty or the blues brothers)

and just try to keep your foot off the gas with this playing (I know you cant hear it anyway with the car running!!)
Henry Mancini - Peter Gunn (also by Emerson Lake and Palmer or The Blues Brothers or if you want a little different --> Art Of Noise featuring Duane Eddie (Extended)

also, just because I ran into this one when looking up the others ...

I am amazed that White Wheeled Limousine by Bruce Hornsby is not on the list. But then it would be a letdown when FFR picks up in the middle of the song.

Hi everyone - will try to go through all of the suggestions on this list again and try to add some of the songs to the playlist. It hasn't been updated in years so probably wouldn't hurt to add a few new tracks. Thanks!

From the "Southern Rock" category some of us southern boys, (and ladies too) like an offering from Marshall Tucker, "24 hours at a time." As well as the Allman Brothers "Midnight Rider" and "Rambling Man"

You cannot leave out "Open All Night" from Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska album. That song gave meaning to my life when I was 20. Every red blooded american boy can relate !

I second "Red Barchetta" from Rush? Really cool car-guy song.

    "Red Barchetta"

My uncle has a country place
    That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
    Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
    And hop the Turbine Freight
    To far outside the Wire
    Where my white-haired uncle waits

    Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
    Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
    Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
    For fifty odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris
    That hides a shining car
    A brilliant red Barchetta
    From a better vanished time
I fire up the willing engine
    Responding with a roar
    Tires spitting gravel
    I commit my weekly crime

    Wind
    In my hair
    Shifting and drifting
    Mechanical music
    Adrenaline surge...

    Well-weathered leather
    Hot metal and oil
    The scented country air
    Sunlight on chrome
    The blur of the landscape
    Every nerve aware

    Suddenly ahead of me
    Across the mountainside
    A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
    To run the deadly race
    Go screaming through the valley
    As another joins the chase

    Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
    I've got a desperate plan
    At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
    Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside
