    Gen 3 Coyote Performance Numbers

Today Ford finally officially released performance numbers for the Gen 3 Coyote that will be in the 2018 Mustang GT. From today's Detroit News: "The redesigned 5.0-liter V-8 engine pushes out 460 horsepower and 420 pound feet of torque. Mated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission, it drops the GT’s 0-to-60 time to under 4 seconds when the pony car is set to Drag Strip mode."

Not too many details about the new Coyote version have been released. Lots of press that it will have both direct and port fuel injection, a higher compression ratio, and apparently will rev higher. Haven't seen details beyond that. I did find this spy shot which may or may not be what the new version looks like. Now an even bigger engine cover.

I have a couple contacts at Ford, and know that the Gen 3 Coyote will be released in a crate version, just like the prior two versions. The timing will be sometime after the new Mustang is released in October. Word is they will keep selling the Gen 2 crate for "a while." But a Gen 3 crate will be coming out eventually.

Hmmm. Gen 3 Coupe with a Gen 3 Coyote. Has a nice ring to it.

That engine cover is horrible, but I would love to put that gauge cluster in a coupe!

Good. Not enough of a difference to make me want to pull my Gen II out and start over. Now I just need to get it running before the III comes out.

I don't yet. But I have a good contact at Ford who promised to keep me informed. They will be showing the 2018 Mustang to the public at "Mustang Alley" during the Woodward Dream Cruise here two weeks from now. The official release date and sales to the public won't be far behind. So expecting to learn more over the next weeks.

For the cost of a new Gen III Coyote you can unleash quite a bit more easy potential from your Gen I. And the bottom end will take it.

I think its the full throttle efficiency of the direct injection that John has his eye on as much as anything. Not many V8s at the 25 Hour and both the GTM and challenge car were set up to carry a ton of fuel to compete with the Porsches and Beemers. Somehow I don't think the WOT mileage is a number we will be seeing as an official statistic though!

I was under the impression that direction injection was great for lower loads but when it came to WOT that engines with secondary injectors would use port injection for most, if not all, of the fuel load.

This seems like a decent article on the subject: http://blog.caranddriver.com/explain...ect-injection/.

Interesting. I could have sworn that the dome shape was changed to make the effective combustion chamber smaller to enable finer adjustments to the fuel with DI at low loads. This could also be my reading when it was first gaining acceptance and talking theory of implementation vs. actual implementation by the car manufacturers. In practice, I can still see tuners upgrading the port injectors when the fuel load increases instead of upgrading the DI system due to the high pressure pump flow concerns like on the Focus ST and others.

Could the larger engine cover be due to the high pressure fuel line routing over the heads? I can see Ford wanting to cover that up.

Missed this article from a couple weeks ago. Finally, some more solid information about the Gen 3 Coyote. Looks like that big space ship styled engine cover is the real thing. Hmm. Article mentions another all new PCM, same thing they did with the Gen 2. I'm still hearing a crate version will be available early 2018.

Posted this in my Gen 3 Coupe build thread on 02/08/2018. Probably as good as we're going to get for now:

"On a separate note, a little bit of news about the Gen 3 Coyote. Last Saturday, our local club (Great Lakes Cobra Club) had a club meeting at a restaurant in Dearborn. Just down the street from Ford world headquarters. We had a special speaker from Ford Performance who presented some information about Coyotes, especially related to their crate versions and use in our cars. He gave some general information about the upcoming Gen 3 Coyote crate, and afterwards I spoke with him in more detail. The high level summary is they do expect the crate Gen 3 to be released later this year. Probably by summer. They have a completed version running in a mule Mustang. Pricing hasn’t been finalized, but it will be more expensive. Apparently the DI components added are not cheap. They will have the Gen 3 crate Coyote displayed at the Ford booth at the Detroit Autorama March 2-4, along with the mule Mustang. I always attend that show so will take the opportunity to see it in person and talk to the Ford people in the booth. Maybe I can get a further update about availability at that time. Also will be using the next month to confirm if it will fit in the Gen 3 Coupe. That DI pump on the RH cylinder bank is an open question. Based on that, I’ll hopefully be able to make a decision about the Gen 3 Coyote for my build. I was also told they have about a one year supply of the Gen 2 Coyote crates in the Ford Performance warehouse. So doesn’t seem there’s too much danger of not being able to get one of those if I decide to go that way. I won't be disappointed if that happens. But not going to give up on the Gen 3 version quite yet. We’ll see. On a separate note, the Fast 'N Loud "winning" Pantera and (I think he said...) Factory Five Snap-On Coupe will be in the Ford Performance booth at Autorama as well. Will be interesting to check those out in person."

The dual fuel coyote is certainly a noticeable increase in performance (its under rated at 460) but to be honest the new 10 speed auto is the real secret to the increased performance - its absolutely nuts with a 10 speed especially in drag mode where the torque management is almost eliminated between ****s.....dont try it on a wet road lol

Haven't heard anything for a month or two. But then haven't asked either. I'm getting closer to needing to make an engine decision for my Gen 3 Coupe build. I'm planning to check this week.

I sure hope it is soon. I don't actually need mine for another 3 months or so, however, I sure want edwardb to get a Gen 3 so I can follow the install in his lovely detailed build thread.

Asked this morning and received the following update from my contact at Ford: The Gen 3 Coyote crate + controls pack is still on schedule for release this summer. But towards the end of the summer. Fits with my build schedule so I'm hanging in there.

I know this is a lot to ask... but why you are chatting them up... and if it is not too much trouble...and as a cobra builder... can you let us know if you think it will fit in a mkiv?

thanks for all your contributions.. past and future!

You're welcome for the last part. Yes, the Gen 3 Coyote will fit in a Mk4 Roadster. The footprint is basically the same. There are a few differences to deal with, but the Gen 3 Coyote will definitely pick up where the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Coyotes left off. In the eight months since the last post in this thread, the Gen 3 crate Coyote has been released by Ford Performance and I have one installed and running in my Gen 3 Coupe build. Details in my build thread, linked below.

The rest, I have no idea what you mean.
