The Chevy Cobra Went For A Little Drive Today, Go-Kart Style!

Hey Gang,

I've made some adjustments and De-Boogered a few things so it was time to take it for a little cruise around the neighborhood.
The car handles very well in spite of the extra weight of the Iron Headed SBC and very heavy ZF 6-Speed gear box, which tips at nearly 190 pounds with all th fix-ins.

This weekend I'll be working on mounting the seats thanks to Jeff @ Breeze Automotive and setting up the top of the transmission tunnel so that it will be removable.
Anyway, I'm finally back to working on the car and man does it feel good to hold and swing my wrenches once more.

I gotta say the most comfortable I ever was in the car was driving it with no seats and sitting on the floor. Very roomy for us tall guys.

Hey War Eagle,

The wheelbase is now 89 3/8" so the top of the rear wheel is directly under the top of the rear wheel arch plus I have good clearance between the tire and rear cockpit aluminum bulkhead so nothing rubs.

315/35-17's might be tough to clear; however, I'm fitted with 285/40-17's on 10" rears rims that only have a 6.25" back spacing so all looks quite good.

Funny. Even with the SBC and non FFR exhaust, it sill sounds like a Factory Five. Very nice build.

I appreciate the kind words from everyone, especially since my project has been in an extended holding pattern this year.

The car does rev very freely, has plenty of power, plus the throttle response of the Edelbrock AVS 800 is excellent; however, I really need to install my Rev-Limiter because the Chevy Cobra hops up to 5,000 RPM's quick. If you Slow The Video Down To 1/2 Or 3/4 Speed, you'll hear that I actually pedal the car a bit when I put the MK-4 into a little wheel spin when showing off at the end of the video clip.

5K RPM is nothing for a SBC Especially a 383 Stroker, should redline about 6500. I had a built 355 that would rev to 9K But not a real street motor.

Everything is set up to run between 2,300-6,500 so you "Spot On Called It!"
I'm really surprised that it will run well between 1,500-2,000 RPM's.
5th gear at 75 MPH should 2,600 with 6th coming in around 1,750.

Thanks for the info about your temporary mufflers ( from your other thread). I really like the way your car sounds. I'm thinking of doing an undercar exhaust on my car. Do you think that size muffler, flowmaster 10, would fit underneath the car under the seats? Or do you think it might hang too low to the ground?

If you are going with an under exhaust system, then you may want to look at Spintech's Low Profile Cruiser Mufflers.

The rear is a Dana 44 Style Moser TSD-500 with a 3.73 ring and pinion.
5th gear is a .75 over drive, with 6th going down to .50 so the car will go way faster than I'm willing to drive it for sure.

Just went for another test spin, but this time with Mrs. Go-Dad-Go riding shotgun.
So far we've logged about 20-25 test miles and am happy where we are at this point.

Really like the sound -- way cool! I noticed how with the Mrs. aboard you are VERY careful -- SMART! When I have no adult supervision I revert back to when I was 18 when I have a new toy. I'm in the process of wiring mine and hope to have the engine in and fired in a couple weeks. I might just have to take mine for a spin soon.

The car will be GM Victory Red, which is the same color that Factory Five painted the Edelbrock MK-4 Roadster.
No hood scoop, no stripes, stainless bumpers, stainless pipes with black roll bars.
The goal is to be the flavor of CSX-3178, minus the J-Style roll bar.

That will be a great color. I have been watching your progress even though I haven't posted on much lately cause of a few projects that are getting in the way. I found another home to buy and I have volunteered to help a friend of mine in Europe puchace an indian motorcycle and sidecar and store it for a few months.

I love the thought that you went with a Chevy engine, does that make your car a "Chobra" (smile). I think the reason Chrysler and chevy didn't get to use their engines in the cobra when Carroll was sopping is cause they put the distributors in the wrong place (smail again).

Hope you have seen my recent paint pics, 12 coats, ruby Red, a Ford color.

Also glad to see that you are NOT underwater !!!

Are you going to do any kind of cold air intake?

I started to do mine without a scoop but it was so hot that I decided to add the scoop.

It made it a lot cooler but now I'm looking at adding a turkey pan to make sure I have cold intake air at low speeds or when stopped.

I'm not sure at this point what I will do since I don't have the body on the car.
With that being said, I don't know if I'll have under hood heat issues or not.
Also, since the engine sits a good bit further forward, my hope is that that I'll have more air circulation under the hood than most folks.
Finally, I hope the Turkey Pan Solution works out for you.
