    Guess what happens when....

Guess what happens when you drive down the road and forget you didn't bolt the hood back on....

    bill_the_cat.jpg

Unfortunately, I now know. At about 30mph it lifts off the body and tumbles through the air like a leaf in the wind... You can't imagine how furious I am with myself. Luckily, there is extremely little damage due to how it miraculously landed. One corner is scraped up pretty bad but nothing shattered and no structural damage. That is the fastest I've ever unbuckled and exited the car to stop the guy behind me from running it over.

Hopefully my lapse in thinking can be a public service announcement to others. I'm extremely lucky the hood is OK, it didn't smash my own windshield, and MOST importantly it didn't hit anyone else's car or cause other damage.

Well........ at least it wasn't painted yet.

That's a bummer, man, but all ended well. And, you have a fun story to tell when the car is done.

Definitely glad it wasn't painted. I'm not sure any heart doctor would classify it as "fun" considering my heart must have stopped for a good 3-4 seconds....

But all ended OK which is good.

Guaranteed, someday you'll be talking to someone and, with a bit of self-deprecation, point to that corner of the hood and relate the story... and there will be a bite of "wow, was I lucky" and some pride at how nice the car turned out, in spite of the incident.

My experience exactly, 14 years ago. I was doing some tune and test drives and didn't put the (at that time) hood pins back in. You described exactly how it went down for me too. Little damage and thankful I didn't get anyone else involved.
Car now has a hinge so no forgetting any more.

FWIW, mine was already painted and needed some work around the PS cam lock and then a repaint of the hood.

Thank goodness it wasn't painted. It probably won't be more than a few minutes of extra filler / sanding work.

I was going to say that I know of two others but with Doc's reply that makes 3! I was competing at RunN'Gun a few years ago when Tony Martin's Backdraft jettisoned it's hood at about 150MPH on the main straight! It achieved some impressive altitude!
