    Hood Scoop

The scoop that came with the kit appears to be plastic, is there a scoop that's made of the same material as the body? Body shop has concerns with bonding the two together (no rivets).

For a period correct look, consider a rivet on aluminum scoop.
If you prefer no body seams, then bond on a glass scoop if you are not a fan of the rivets.

    Hope this link helps:

Also, I'm not a fan of bonding dissimilar materials so I'd suggest getting a glass scoop; however, it may be Polyester instead of Vynlester Resin which are more compatable than glassing ABS Plastic.

Correct...do not bond the ABS scoop to a 'glass hood. It'll come back to haunt you later. I've found early Mk4 fiberglass scoops (what was supplied for the first year or 2) in the forum classifieds from guys who went scoopless. Try posting a "want to buy" and you might get lucky!

Factory five still sells a mk III hood with a fiberglass scoop you may want to check and see if the mk iii and iv
    Use the same hood

May cost more it but would accomplish the look you wanted

    Just a thought

No bonding ABS to glass. If you don't find one in the classifieds get ahold of me 951-676-0191 Jeff Miller. I have molds to make the scoops.....just not a lot of time to do it so I don't advertise that fact....well, I didn't until now.....damn!

    Jeff,
Since you don't advertise, if I asked you to make one what are we talking on time and cost?

The screws that are usually used are called button head. They are a domed head that uses an Allen key.

Using rivets, what kind of rivets are you using? And if you are using different rivets than the one for aluminium panels, where do you get them?

As mentioned before in post 8 above I used button head stainless steel screws and nylock stainless nuts with stainless flat washers under the nuts. The fasteners were acquired from Fastenal. -- Chuck

Vinylester resin, fiberglass mat and Rage.

Note that the scoop is black because it was cut out of a Mk3 hood NOT because it's ABS plastic.

    Cheers,
    Jeff

If the scoop will be riveted to the hood, is the plastic scoop recommended or not?

I like the plastic scoop---more symmetrical and less lumpy than the 'glass one plus it doesn't need the edges trimmed or the underside smoothed and finished. I do cut back the turndowned lip at the front and use buttonheads and nuts instead of rivets though.

A slight change, hope no one minds.

Are there any taller and wider fiberglass scoops? Can one be fabricated? I believe that I'll need to cut a hole of 14 - 15 inches in diameter through the hood to fit my air cleaner. Just curious for now but this will get more important as the build progresses.

    Thanks,

    Jim
