IRS Toe Arm To Spindle Fit

    Hi all,

Just recently started my build. I've been meaning to get a build thread going, but have not yet had the spare time (sty tuned, maybe this weekend ...).

Anyway, I've been working on my IRS install. All the unusual tight fit issues which I was able to anticipate and overcome thanks for all the helpful tips posted on this forum. I did not see much written about the Toe Arm to Spindle fit. I while assembling the right side onto the chassis, I ran into a rather larger interference between the flanges of the Toe Arm and the bushing width (greater than an 1/8"). I did not see anything written on this, so I was wondering if it was something I was doing wrong.

I have a couple of picture of what I am referring to, but unfortunately I don't know how to post them. I also came up with a way to splay the flanges. I can post a pick on this as soon as I figure out how ...

Any/all feedback on this is much appreciated.

Deleted comment and picture. Apparently referring to the toe arm attachment at the chassis, not the spindle itself.

There was a design change with a longer bolt and spacer that gives more clearance. When was your kit shipped? mine had the wrong parts and was shipped late March 2017 ( Coupe but same IRS ) check with FFR
yes you have to clean the powder coat out of the bolt holes and "stretch the mounting tabs" I used threaded rod, washers and 2 nuts.

Thanks David and Edwardb (I was referring to the Toe arm attachedment to the spindle). Go my kit in Aug (17) and the IRS components about a month or so later (approx. Sept).

The interference is more than the thinkness of the PC (about 1/8" to 3/16). I was think about using a long bolt with a couple nut to spread the tabs open. I guess I was surprises to see so much interference. I did not see this mentioned in a couple of posts I could find (including Edwardb's build thread).

I would like to post a couple of pic's of what I'm talking about, but still haven't master the art of attachments (any tricks here would be appreciated too).

In that case, I'll put the picture back that I deleted previously. This pic, taken while I was mocking things up early in my build, shows the clearance mine had. From around the end of 2015. Not sure what has changed.

Yeah, I saw your pic in your thread. I definitely don't have that fit. Not sure what has changed either. I bought the spindles from FFR.

I will try to separate using the long bolt and a couple nuts. I will try to post some pics as soon as I can figure out how.

    I will try

Thanks Paul. I did see that pic on your build thread. I definitely don't have that fit. I'm not sure what changed. I did by the spindles from FFR (for what it's worth)

I am going to attempt to adjust tomorrow using a bolt and a couple of nuts.

I would post a couple of pics, but I am still trying to figure out how to do so.

I just completed this step today actually! I also had the same issue. Where the toe arm attaches to the spindle, there was about 1/8 inch of interference. I used a threaded rod with two bolts and washers to spread the toe arm apart, then removed the threaded rod and was able to attach it to the spindle. I've actually had to do this with almost every attachment with the IRS including the lower and upper control arms as well. It is a very useful trick!

Edwardb - thanks for the response. I did see this pic in your build thread. I definitely don have this fit (I wish I did). Not sure why the change/difference.

dncharo - thanks for confirming you are seeing the same thing. I was planning to use the threaded rod and a couple nut to spread as needed. Plan to do this today.

Thanks again all (and heads up to others)

    Success.

    Thank all for confirm.

I opted to paint over the powder coat as I like the contrast.

Toe arm connection looks fine. For the UCA connection, Factory Five issued a tech change during my build. Now probably two years ago. They changed to a difference adapter plus added a large washer. Seems like with the vintage of your kit that should have been included. Might want to check that. I suspect a safety concern. What they sent me looked like this:

Here's a build thread where the IRS was assembled with the updated parts:

Interesting. I did received the extra parts, but the instructions don't show what to do with them. The few build threads I reviewed didn't show them (including your thread). Did you install update post your build ?

Much thanks for the review and feedback.

The main IRS assembly work in my build thread was done, and the pictures taken, before the update was issued. I mentioned in my build thread later, including the picture I posted of the kit received from Factory Five. But I didn't post pictures of it installed. Only commented that I had installed it.

Depending on the vintage of kit in the build threads you're looking at, they may not have had it at the time either. The instructions you have may or may not show it. The IRS instructions on Factory Five's website don't show it. The brand new Gen 3 Coupe manual I just received does show the new parts.

    Thanks Paul.

I will update my assembly accordingly.

BTW, I met you at the FFR open house. We chatted about the Coyote install. I ended up ordering my kit a couple days later.

Here is a pick of my Son and I in front of a familiar looking car (8674)

Thinking about getting a build threat going as I can sure use the coaching along the way ...
