Show Me Your Column Mounted Turn Signal Setup

This is actually for my Coupe build, but will post here since this area seems to get more traffic plus they're the same. I've used Russ Thompson's VW based turn signal setup on each of my builds to date. Works great and really makes the column to dash area look much more clean and finished. Very much want the same thing on the Coupe.

A few days ago I contacted Russ to order one for my latest build, and learned what some of you maybe know already. The VW turn signal assembly that is the starting point is apparently in short supply and not easy to find. He has a waiting list and is trying to get more. I'm now on the list. Hopefully he'll be able to find more and have one for me over the next months. No huge hurry. In the meantime, I've been poking around looking at what other options might be out there. Nothing that I've seen yet is remotely as nice. I really don't want the dash mounted switch, even with the electronic timer some are using. I really like the self-cancelling stalk setup, including the button on the end I like to use for the low/high beams.

I know North Racecars has traditionally been another source, but it uses the same VW assembly. I haven't checked with them, but guessing they too may be having trouble filling orders.

Any alternate solutions out there? Maybe someone has one of Russ's pieces laying around they're not going to use??? Thanks in advance.

Shameless Plug... my totally custom setup. The switch in my case isn't column mounted.. but it could be I guess.

Richard Oben (me), North Racecars and Russ are old (1998) Friends and we got our switches from the same place. Which was all good until the unfortunate passing of the supplier. For now we at NRC have stopped making the turn signal set up. Russ and NRC use different approaches but the same base switch. For now everyone will have to be patient as Russ is working on a new supplier. Hope this explains some stuff for everyone. As for the coupe we always sent a MKIII - IV version for the new coupe we would have to see one, but I doubt it is different. HTH, Richard.

Thanks for the information. Patience? Not my long suit. The Gen 3 Coupe is different than the Mk3/Mk4 Roadsters and maybe previous Coupes (I don't know) but Russ is on that. Just needs the base parts.

That's just the switch itself. Russ starts with the entire hub including the switch. Two listed on that same website. Both show out of stock and "hard to get."

I have the GEN 3 setup from Russ. Much different mounting system from all the previous cars.

Too bad about the loss of your supplier, I just plugged the NRC switch on the other forum. Hope you find a new supplier, you make a great unit

Maybe try Cobra Restorers or Hillbank for something a bit more original looking.

Yes, this past year has been tough, getting the correct VW switch for my system has really been a pain since my normal source ran out. The good news is they are doing another run the first of feb. with the switches due 6 weeks later. In the mean time I have been
buying everyone out. Several places have taken my orders saying "no problem " getting me more only to find out they can't. The Cip site was getting them from my source I believe and I bought all they had left a couple months ago.

I have lots of guys waiting and work daily looking for switch sources. I have a couple due in today or tomorrow and if they look good I'll order more. The main problem is whats left out there are extremely expensive or junk.

Hi Paul, I built my own from parts from a 66 Mustang. I've restored several mustangs over the years so I had the parts on hand. It take some customizing to do this. The back of the FF hub must be turned down and some roll pins installed to act as the cancelling pins. You then have to mount a 1-1/2 ID tube, install a nylon bushing and shorten the mustang housing about 1/2". Then of course you have to interface the mustang switch electrically. Mine works fine. It was a lot of work and I'd likely not have done if I didn't have the parts on hand and access to lathe. Turn Signal 2.jpg
