    4L65E Trans Speed Sensor

    Fellow builders, of which I'm finally excited to be a part of now...took a while to get here but, better late than never. Anyway, I'm 4 weeks in to my 33 hot rod build and things are going well. i have a problem, I think, with the supplied speed sensor. It's a mechanical sensor with a plastic adapter gear. This will not fit on this trans but, the plug is a 2 wire match for the harness. I believe this requires a pulse type sensor. Does FFR supply the correct sensor for the trans or is this something I need to get? Please correct me if I'm wrong about the supplied sensor.
    As always, thanks in advance for the advice. This is really a great place for answers.

    By supplied speed sensor, I assume you mean the one that came in your kit? If so, in my experience that's a Ford style sensor and goes into various Tremec manual transmissions like the T-5, TKX, etc. if needed. I doubt it's intended for your GM based 4L65E. I finished a 35 truck build earlier this year with an LS3 and an 4L65E from Gearstar. I used the already installed speed sensor for the Autometer gauges plus the Dakota Digital cruise control. It worked fine.

    Thanks Edward....that was my thought but, I didn't know if what I needed would be compatible with FFR speedo...sorry, yes, it was the supplied sensor.

    Your 4L65e should have come with a speed sensor already installed like Edward mentioned.
    What engine and tranny ECU’s are you using? You should have a connector from the ECU wiring harness (not the Ron Frances harness) that plugs into the tranny speed sensor.

    I too am using the LS 5.3 with a 4L65E automatic, and I also received the Ford VSS and gear in my kit, but is is not used in our applications. Your speedometer will get its pulse from the speed sensor in the right side of the tail housing of the transmission, and then it is rear by the ECM, which comes out as the black wire for speedometer signal in the stand alone wiring harness. That black speedometer signal wire will connect to the signal terminal on the back of the speedometer.

    btw...started my 1st build about 4 weeks ago but, haven't started my build thread yet...lovin it and hate to stop what I'm doing...documenting and taking plenty of pics though.

    Did you guys get the USB stick with the software that allows you to program your 4L65e tranny?
    Things like shift points up and down for each gear, shift pressures, diff gear ratio, rear tire diameter, etc.

    I have not seen anything like that yet. I bought a complete engine/trans/ECM/and wiring harness from a salvage yard, but I changed the harness to a new stand alone harness. I plugged everything in and all shift points hit nicely, no codes, and all seems to be working correctly. I did have the ECM reprogrammed to delete the VATS.

    The HGM COMPUSHIFT Sport TCM transmission controller I installed in my truck build had this capability. Used an app on my iPhone with Bluetooth to see what the transmission was doing, make shift changes, etc. Gearstar Performance Transmissions, in Akron, Ohio, who built my 4L65E, recommended the HGM controller. I had a couple questions along the way and HGM provided excellent support. I don't have experience with anything else.

    I actually never changed the shift points from the default settings after entering all the vehicle data. It seemed to be fine based on how I drove it. But I did use it to monitor that it was shifting properly, torque converter was locking up, temps were OK, etc. Certainly had more capability than I used.

    I bought everything for GM Connect and Cruise.
    The TCM stores 2 shifting programs selectable via a toggle switch plus has a dyno mode and lets you unlock the converter.

    Edward, I was just researching this not long ago. Nice to see someone already using. Looks like a nice setup at a reasonable cost considering some of the alternatives. My engine and trans came with the factory harness and controller that he assures me it'll be just fine...we know what assurances can mean sometimes, so an upgrade, or backup will be in order.
