    Saved a Gen 1 GTM : DAY 65 Build Graduated 3/17/2022

    I AM BACK!!!.... lol....

After an almost 18 month break - I couldn't stand it any longer!!! I needed to build something.... so I was able to purchase this GEN 1 GTM which has been through 2 owners and is still not complete. So why not an 1100+ mile one day trip to go pick it up and get busy! Not like we can go to car shows or anything, since they were all cxl'd last year....

Inventory and complete tear down starts in a few hours - waiting for the coffee to kick in.

    Erik,

All I can say is I wish I had your skills and enthusiasm to take on such a daunting task.
I would say good luck, but when you have your kind of skills, you need very little luck.
Okay, what the heck; Good Luck Anyway!

Erik Awesome, if anyone can finish it and turn it into a thing of beauty you can !
My truck I purchased second hand but never touched by the previous owner however here in Illinois because I bought it out of state I had to go with a bonded title. It took a bit longer to get done because of covid and Illinois closing down last spring but I got it done last October. I can’t wait to watch your progress. Rob

Could not have asked for a better day to do this - 50 degrees and sunny.

Full inventory completed, pressure washed the entire car and transaxle...removed the OEM wire harness and got it into the garage to start disassembly. I did a complete video of the experience - kinda long but funny in spots of what I found...

    First day of disassembly...

Right off the bat ran into trouble trying to wheels off...lol... LOCKNUTS! The key was not in the inventory... soooo... looked at it for a little bit, went inside and grabbed a cup of coffee... lots of answers I found in and around the activity of making coffee.... as soon as it was done... I went out and grabbed the welder and welded some nuts on top of the locknuts.... done!

Anyway - only got about 4-5 hours on the car on Sunday as I had somebody stop in needing help with their 65 mustang.

Anyway - the front is stripped down as far as it needs to go I think - kept going until I found a tight bolt or a clean spot... body will come off today...also need to sand down the aluminum I took off and drop off for powder coat..

Congrats! At least it looks like the body is in fairly "virgin" condition. On most of the "multiple owner" GTM's we get in here, the previous owners have already done multiple "body mods"....that we normally have to try to "un-do".....

    Good luck on the build!

Hey Shane.... yeah there is a "make it fit" mod on the driver side striker area that will need fiberglass put back I am trying to decide this go around to remove the vette overflow tank and put the canton one in the back... have you done any this way?

    Hey Erik,

Welcome to the madness, although it looks like you are very familiar FFR builder. Wishing you the best of luck and I'll be following along with the progress.

BTW that was a fancy fire suppression system you found there, should be able to get top dollar for that LOL.

He has. There are two versions of the rear mounted tank. The one I sell, and the one Shane sells. The MRS one is a little cheaper IIRC and is a bit more "universal" in where it can be mounted, whereas the VRaptor one tucks in nicely but, as far as I know, only goes in one location in the engine compartment. Both work well and fix the cooling system flaw of the forward low mounted tank.

So no issue with removing that tank and losing a little volume as I understand your response. - I have several Canton Tanks laying around ... thanks!

And in looking at Shane's - it looks like I can just go to the big tank in the back .... thanks!

Took an hour after work and took a few more parts off the car and also dropped off all the front aluminum off at the coater and will pick that up on Friday to start reassembly this weekend.

As Crash mentioned....yes, you can mount the Canton tank or just use the OEM coolant reservoir and put in in the same place above the LH fuel tank. That is what we normally do since we already have the OEM reservoir and it connects to the engine/cooling system the same as in the 'Vette. I have a weld-on bracket already designed for this....thought I already had that on my website, but guess not......I'll have to add that.

Shane that's a great option for the coolant expansion tank. I did the same thing on the water pump side of the engine, but had to modify the hatch hinge to make it work.

If you use Shane's brackets and a stock tank it probably is even cheaper than the MRS setup. The only ones I recalled seeing from VRaptor/Shane previously used an aluminum tank that I am guessing is something like a Canton Vette replacement tank? It does make the engine bay look a little "cleaner" with the aluminum tank versus the stock tank.

Day 2 of disassembly - All the major pieces are off and ready to be inspected, cleaned or replaced... all aluminum that needs to be coated has been removed - the chassis powder coat is showing its age - so I am going to base/clear the front and back half of the chassis and make it presentable (this weekend) - should start going back together next week hopefully. I still have to rip out the rest of the brake lines now that I think about it - not bad. Clean and scrub - rinse repeat

Day 3 - Clean, Clean, Clean - lot and lots of loose hardware!!

This is the Right Rear - the left was just as bad...

After some TLC and disassembly and CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN - brakes had almost no lube on them either

here is the Left Rear - only started here because it was closest to the door...lol...

    all epoxy paint

didn't take pics of the rest of the car but it got another wash and vacuum today as well - 3 more corners to go....

Work was pretty busy this week so other than picking up a few parts and cleaning up the work space and prep'ing for the weekend not some much - but on Saturday got up and rode 22 miles on the indoor trainer and just looked at the build at the same time and went over the next few steps...

Started back about 11 with a plan.... THe Chassis coating as I mentioned earlier was pretty beat up and when you walk up to these cars and open the hood, seeing the chassis all scratched up isn't great. I took MOST of the aluminum off, but I have often wondered that in the build process if you could just put the raw aluminum panels on and then just spray basecoat / clear coat over the chassis and everything.... Tony Zullo did this on our HotRod during the Car Warriors build - I installed the hot rod firewall and then scuffed the front half of the chassis and he painted it.... it looked really good... I just hadn't thought to do it on one of my builds. The Powder Coat guy here in town also says that the powder coat can be used as a "primer". So with nothing to lose... painted the front and back half of the chassis in Audi Gloss Black, along with all the aluminum that you will see....I setup the mix for a fast cure and went on my way.. Stopped a little while later to let it flash (beer time) - and then started hanging panels and such... today should be pretty good as well as long I don't hit a snag. I receive some bracket from Mr Shane as well - so one of those will be going on - will have pics of that. Anyway here are some pics.... enjoy...we are now BUILDING!

Got started a little later than I wanted today... but made decent progress - all the suspension is painted now and I actually hung a corner. The other side will go on tomorrow night. Waiting on 2 rear panels so I can get the rear back on. I also go some parts from Shane so I now have my overflow in the rear. I also decided to toss the donor radiator and condenser - they were quite nasty... so laid these in as well... all in all a pretty productive day.

Day 6... Couldn't stand looking at the suspension sitting all pretty on the floor... So hung all 4 corners... could throw the wheel on and make a roller - but it's cold

ordered a ton of parts today to include the new Crate LS3 from "the house of power" aka VeryCoolParts.com - thanks Wayne.

also ordered the Stance Air Lift system for the front - the earlier thread was very timely and a "cleaner" option than the hydraulic lift - which is good since me and fluids is real problem....

the reflection off the painted panels in the rear is pretty cool

Man, you're moving fast. I'd still be sitting there staring at a pile of rusty and dirty parts... Looking great. Just remember, you bought this because you were bored and needed something to work on. Don't be getting it done too fast. You'll just get bored again.
