Chassis #111 2006 STi with Blouch 2.5XTR First Drive Video * 10/7 update

    10/7 update:
My tuner sent me a base map for Blouch turbo and supporting mods. This car is INSANE. Just wow. Heres a short video

    https://vid.me/H5n

Reached a huge step in my build with a maiden drive out of my driveway. 2006 STI donor with 6speed as well as a Blouch 2.5XTR Turbo and supporting mods. Will be installing a muffler as just a downpipe with high flow cat is too loud.

Car has not been tuned yet so was not able to do anything fun. Shifter with reverse lockout was completed after the drive. (Even tho i was digging the tube extension shifter )

Take a look at the video: https://vid.me/xZ3 https://vid.me/Nvv

Congrats and the car sounds great! What were your impressions? Anything you have to adjust? Looked pretty solid, no odd noises.

The engine sounds great. Purrs like a kitten at low rpm. Anything over 3k gets weird. It's still running in the stock sti map. Will get a base map from the tuner once he opens tomorrow and a dyno tune scheduled for the 25th.

Tires are 255/35/18 in front and 295/30/18 in rear.

Frame cross members required modification under the 6speed to fit. Other than that, with the sti hubs and running gear, it wasnt a problem. Sti axles were used for the rear.

The shifter worked great with the 6speed. A little tight but ill get used to it.

Didnt have any cels with the exception of TGV related stuff and the fuel tank. So overall really happy with everything. Cant wait for a tune and seeing what kind if rubber can be burned.

The front end felt like it was too light and had the sensation that it left the ground on some of the bumps during the ride.

Interesting, hopefully putting the body on will settle that down. Have you done an alignment? And do the front wheels rub? I'm guessing you'll be doing some fender flares out back?

Ive done an alignment but will redo it once all of the suspension components adjust into place.

The body doesnt add much weight tho. Im hoping youre correct tho.

I have no rubbing issues as of now. Yes, body flares will be required and installed

Im with you. It sounds awesome within the car. My only concern is passing inspection to get it street legal.

    Thoughts?

LOL, i wanted to make sure the shifter functioned properly before i welded in the setup with the reverse lockout. My only issue with the shifter is that there is no "home" position. Ill have to figure something out with some springs or something. Makes for finding gears difficult sometime, especially on deceleration.

My wrx 5 speed had a slot with a spring inside to keep the shift selector in a "home" position, that was located in the back end of the transfer case housing. Do STI transmissions not have a similar feature? The thing I'm talking about keeps the selector between 3rd and 4th in neutral.

It may be just slop within the shifter linkage. Ill take a closer look and tighten things a bit more

The feeling that one gets after putting in all the hours with the STI donor and wiring and seeing it put down that much power can be compared to child birth, its a beautiful sight

kurk, I am very interested in how you placed your intercooler. Could you take some more descriptive photos and post them for review. Thanks Grayghost ROGER

The intercooler is a front mount and all of the associated plumbing. Additional silicone tubing was purchased to connect everything. The current mount is just temporary due to the requirement of needing final body fitment. Its nothing special. Just gets the job done.

Just took it for a spin, wheel spin in 4th doing 60mph

I, like others, plan on using a six-speed. I have mine and a LSD for it and the one adapter piece that FFR sells. I will do a gear change to make it close-ratio.
Info on how to actually do it seems impossible to find.
Could you post info? Hopefully in the 818 thread about it.
Looks like you are using the standard FFR shifter? I bought a shifter from a MR2 to use in mine. I hope to feel the neutral without added springs or mechanisms.
Reverse lockout is not a big concern to me, but I'd love to see pictures and explanation of how the transaxle was modified.

Im considering going with the k-tuned shifter or other alternative that is not plastic. I have difficulty finding gears.

With the MR2 Shifter, ill need reverse running cables correct?

No, Just the reverse lockout cable. Mind you, I am not building yet; just accumulating parts like a squirrel collecting nuts for the winter.
On the internet, I have seem installations in non-818 kits where they used the MR2 shifter. You can go straight back with the cables by mounting them to the upper side of the pivot.

So I will need new cables to run an MR2 shifter? Im thinking of ordering the K-Tuned shifter that FFR offers.

    Hi Kurk,
I am running the MR2 shifter. The cables come out the back (toward the engine). They connect to the trans with the standard FFR configuration. In the picture below you can see a big loop as the FFR cables are about 8ft to long for this configuration. cable.png I am going to get shorter cables.

Since there is some clearance between the inner and outer cable jacket. Any bend in the cable will add backlash. So with the extra loop I get almost 3/16" movement at the shifter cable connection before any movement at the trans cable connection. It is important for everyone to try and run the cable with the least number of bends.

The MR2 shifter is a very short shifter as you can see in my dyno video. I need a better video of the Shifter. I like it.

Looks about right to me, but without units on the boost plot and knowing what fuel is being used it's tough to say.

We had one on our dyno last week and really didn't see a huge increase in power over an AWD application. It was maybe 5% higher if i remember correctly.

Congrats on getting it up and running!

I assume that the extra length on the STI front axles didn't cause any problems? I am just about to drop my transmission in and I'll be using those same axles with the stubs changed over.
