    Lazrcng MK4 Build Thread

My MK4 has a 5/18 completion date at the Factory. I am excited for it to arrive, I have wanted a cobra since I was 13 years old. It was the first car I was impressed with as a kid.

I have been a drag racer since 1987 and recently sold my 7 second @ 170 mph dragster to begin this next chapter. (though will still be driving the dragster from time to time)

My build begins with a complete kit, then:
Ford Racing 535hp 427 crate engine
    Tremec TKO 600
    3 link 8.8 rear end w/ 3.55:1 gears
    Vintage Halibrand 17x9, 17x10.5

I have not decided on the paint yet, but leaning toward black/silver stripes or silver/black stripes. Got some time to figure it out.

All of the tin will be powder coated black hammertone, to keep some race car feel to the build.

I already have my personalized plate: BADASP2 (registered to my daily driver for now)

I have been a lurker on this forum and have already used much of the information I have read to prepare.

I am planning to have the car driving painted by late summer/fall.

Watch for updates, and thank you all for your insight already.

    Here weeeeeee goooooo!

    welcome aboard.

Sounds like a great little car you have planned there. And a very quick build time frame as well.

Good luck with it, and don't forget to post pictures. We *love* pictures in this place.

Welcome to your new family. One question, you signature says 3 link but I see new red plastic bushings in the ears on top of the axle where the 4 links would mount.

I ordered the rear-end from MPS Auto in Georgia and they include them. They will not be used, most likely removed before installed.

I ordered the Ford Racing 427 Crate Motor (long block) from Summit Racing, then added the accessories, Intake, Carburetor, Fuel Pump, Switched Oil Pan to Canton Low Profile, etc.....myself.

I was hoping you would say that. Since you have that big motor I recommend you use the 3 link banana bracket reinforcements from these guys

    Sounds like a fun build.

There was someone a few years back that had "BAD ASP". Someone reported it as "offensive" and DMV said he had to turn his plate in. I guess the lady didn't know what an asp was. I don't know what the outcome was.

I was planning to weld the bracket that comes with the kit. Though does someone have a picture of the one from vpmcobras.com? I wonder if it is the same thing that comes with the FFR bracket (pictured below), it extends under the front of the housing and bolts to the hold next to the pinion.

I know how you feel. I changed my mind on motors 100 different times before I decided on the 427. Just seemed like the right motor..........tons of HP in a very light care. Hmmmmm, I guess I didn't stray too far from Drag Racing after all. LOL

I'm curious to hear how drivable that engine is in day to day use. I bet it sounds unbelievably good! Where are you located?

I am in the Akron Ohio area.

I do not think it will be an issue, the radiator is very exposed to airflow and I am putting the fan in a shroud which should be sufficient when sitting at lights and slower speeds etc...I used to have a similar set up in a 68 Camaro (406 cu in 575 hp 4.11 gear no overdrive) and drove it everywhere in California without issues.

I also think it will sound awesome with the 109-110 lobe center cam. Looking forward!

Chris, I ordered my header from Stainless Header in Fargo, ND (custom for the Ford Racing Z304 cylinder heads). I used an Edelbrock Super Victor #2924 and a Quickfuel Q-Series 750 #BDQ-750. Motor mounts I thought I would use the Energy Suspension ones from the kit.

    Day 1 of actual work:

Since I am waiting for my father, who is coming in from CA this weekend, to help lift off the body I decided to start assembling various components in prep for installation. I put together the front coil over shock, installed the ball joints in the upper controll arms, bolted the "bannana" bracket on the rear end / drilled out the lower bracket, began to put on the rear lower controll arm brackets and ran into the first snag. One of the drivers side bracket bolts does not quite line up, so I have to take the caliper/rotor off to drill it out. Thats is what I will start with tomorrow.

I also rounded up the unpainted parts to bring to the powder coater.

Thanks, I have read there might be clearance issues depending on the intake, carb setup and recommendations for lower engine mounts and Canton oil pan. I am going to use this motor and will go the Stainless Header route. Should be a beast!

    Thanks, Chris

I also changed the oil pan to the 7.5 inch Canton pan. Should be OK, we'll see!

Not a corny pic at all. If you look at a bunch of build threads I bet 80-90% of them have the same pic.
