For the AEM CD-7 install, what kind of wiring harness changes are needed?
Is it compatible with the iWire harness?
The CD-7 is strictly a Can-bus unit, no analog inputs. I’m not sure if it would be possible with a oem ecu, but it’s being used with most aftermarket ecu’s. It’s quite possible that’s there’s a work around to input analog channels to another device that then uses canbus to connect to the CD-7, or use a more modern Subaru ecu that has canbus, but that’s all way over my head. I’m using an AEM Infinity ecu and the universal harness had canbus plugs already wired in, so for me it was plug n play.

Looking good Adam. Hopefully the engine is in good shape. The like the idea of the no pins on the hatch.
Just got mine back from wiring. Got to finally turn it on and hear it!!! Got a little exhaust leak from the turbo v band but thats an easy fix.

No e85 I wish. We are trying to hit 400-450 on pump gas and low boost 10-12lbs. After I figure out what im going to do with the transmission, then we can turn her up with some good fuel. I will be limited by my injectors and pumps though. Thinking we can hit 600hp.
Here a video of our crew taking the win at IFO 2018 in Lebanon NY.
We were having a couple of issues with the car shutting off during burnout, also come to find out Turbo was completely trashed. Still ran PB of 7.50

Wow that’s quick! It’s a good thing that rotaries make less torque than piston engines, at 400hp I’d expect you to be around 3-350ft/lbs which will help with keeping trannies. My initial goal is 350 on low boost. I’m hopeful that my RA 5mt will hold up, but with 305 stickies my axles will probably break before the tires spin.

That’s a neat video Frank, thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas!
No updates for awhile, the car is ready to drive/troubleshoot/tune but unfortunately I only had a few days off since filming the last video and didn’t get a chance to work on it. I did pick up some ID1050x and ID2000 injectors along with some Full Function Engineering fuel rails. Still need to decide on a surge tank, FPR, and in-line filter. Also want to mount the wing before spring. I’m going to focus on my other car/bike projects over the winter and really get back into the 818 when the weather warms up in the spring.

ID1050x! Yeah, nice I got those last year too, I mean 1 year ago. Of course still need to try them but apparently they kick behinds!
You got what, 1 injector per rotor?
Why would you use ID2000s? On top of the ID1050x as a double-injector setup?
Speaking of rotary, no time to waste, man, you have to upgrade for the latest rotary technology (2006 )!
Bikes projects? What bikes, what bikes?
Happy New Rotary Year!

Each rotor has 2 injectors, a primary(id1050x) and a secondary(id2000). The secondary comes on once the primary hits a preset duty cycle. So each rotor will have 3050cc of fuel.
No hydrogen here, but I may add methanol or switch to ethanol at some point.
I have a 78 Honda cb750 that I started chopping before I got the 818 that I want to finish. It’s been welded to my bench for about 5 years and is probably in a lot of pictures and videos. I also have 02 road star warrior 1700 that needs some maintenance and a 93 gsxr with a blown motor that I’d like to convert to electric. Suffice it to say I have a few projects.
Happy New Year my friend!

He’s got some interesting theories, and no doubt he’d be right about some of that if Mazda cane out with another rotary powered car. I don’t see that happening, but who knows, maybe a limited production one day. The last time they redesigned it for fuel efficiency and emissions it didn’t work out so well. I’m not worried about either though.
I always have lots of projects on the go, I just love tinkering in the garage. When I’m busy at work I buy lots of parts, and when it’s slow I install them. Nature of the oil and gas industry, it’s go go go or full stop usually.

Seems I have 1-4 but no 5-R. I believe it’s the Reverse Check Sleeve as without the t-case housing on I can engage both 5th and reverse.
Oh and for those that remember my last compression test being bleak, and improving a little after soaking in oil, it’s gotten even better now that it’s been through a few heat cycles. Front 106/94/100psi and rear 96/101/91psi. I am premixing a little heavy to aid in freeing everything up. Also checked my coolant for exhaust gasses and there were no signs, so o-rings seem ok so far.

So I did manage to repair my Reverse Check Sleeve and found both 5th and Reverse. Took the car for a few spins and my small axle seal leak became a big one. Both seals are new and 99% sure on properly and the right sides. However I did notice that the axles were free to move in and out of the transmission and didn’t snap in place. I pulled the axle to see if the cir clip was still on and it was.
Now for those not following along with my never ending build, last year I swapped my ‘07 Impreza transmission for a 99 STI 5mt. I thought it was odd that a 99 5mt would have male axles and female transmission input like the ‘07’s but the axles I’d assembled previously fit right in. The transmission luckily did come with front axles but I didn’t give them much of a look. Fortunately I’m a pack rat and put them in the garage attic.
E5ADA05C-7CFC-465D-8DB9-71D33883D7DC.jpg2A427D15-B6DB-49AC-8046-FB739F743386.jpg
Well now I know why my seals were leaking and the axles didn’t lock in place. The male stub that sticks out in pre ‘04 transmissions was still on the axles that came with the transmission making the transmission appear to be female. I disassembled both axles to see if I could just swap CV’s but the splines don’t match up on the two different cv’s.
So my question is this. Are the axles FFR sells two different lengths or different splines? I know aftermarket axles can be different splines so could these axles work if I found female CV’s that used the same splines? Or is my only option to get some axles from FFR?

I had my hands on two different FFR axle types. No clue if this will help you but see this post about them. (Granted I think you are asking about the axle stubs at the transmission, not the long axles...)

I'm guessing you wanted the 99 sti 5mt for the RA gears? Would those swap into a newer case (like 02-03)? That might be a cheaper option if custom axles need to be made.
Mostly it was the factory limited slip that I wanted, the RA gears were a bonus. I got the transmission for cheaper than a limited slip so I thought it was a no brainer, but it’s been one headache after another.
Just talked to FFR and they just have the 2 different sizes, the ones in Art’s link above. The transmissions all have the same spline (25 I believe) so it’s just my inner CV’s that are the problem as they’re 22 spline. I’m going to try and source some ‘02 wrx axles and I expect they’ll work. Assuming they’re oem and not aftermarket.

Well I picked up a rebuilt ‘02 wrx front axle from Napa today after FFR confirmed that they only have the 29-29spline and 29-21 spine axles and they’re all the same length. I figured if the NAPA one had 29 or 21 spline then I could make it work. Well luckily enough it was 29 spline and worked on the axles I have! Already have one side back together. Unfortunately yesterday when I’d given up all hope I push the 818 against the wall and brought my rx8 in the garage for some much needed maintenance and upgrades and now I can’t access the other side of the 818, lol. First world problems...

Were you able to track down another axle that worked?
Last edited by longislandwrx; 10-07-2019 at 08:09 AM.
A well stocked beverage fridge is the key to any successful project.
The RX8 was bought to try my hand at drifting and be a backup track car in case I’d booked a track day and the weather turned out to be poor. So I installed some stiffer diff bushings, welded the diff, coilovers all around and a header back exhaust. Also picked up some new wheels and sticky tires. This all took much longer than I’d expected! Finally got the car out of the garage late July and got an alignment. Car is fun, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it to any drift practices due to work.

Sorry Frank, it has been way too long!
Once I got the RX8 out of the garage I went back to Napa and got another one, installed it and dumped in about 3 litres of oil before realizing it was just pouring out the bottom just as fast. When I’d swapped transmissions I took the new seals I’d put in the ‘’07 trans out and put them into the ‘99 one, which is why it only leaked a little when I had the ‘07 axles installed. So I had to take everything apart again, get the proper seals and put it all back together. Fortunately this time it all went well.
So after I got my axles/seals sorted, I drove it up and down my street a bunch playing with the ecu to get the tune close enough for a drive to inspection. Since then I’ve been extremely busy with work, combined with planning and going on a trip to Europe, where I got to see 2 F1 races, there just hasn’t been time.
Anyone F1 fans know where these are?

5FAEF2AD-D478-4F1E-BEED-8FAFBC3F71F4.jpeg
However I finally had an opportunity on Monday to go for my inspection, and I failed. Not terribly though, but I’m working on getting the fails addressed in the next few days and going back for re-inspection.

I didn’t. I still don’t like the rear, but decided the FRS lights just weren’t going to work nicely with the FFR bumper. Plan is to eventually completely redo the rear bumper and do an elaborate rear diffuser, at which point I’ll consider the FRS lights or something completely different.
