    That sucks. What elements failed?
Where you aware of those before the inspection or they pulled a Trudeau on you during inspection?

3rd high mount brake light (still pretty sure this isn’t a legal requirement), my battery tie down was a thick rubber strap like on a motorcycle (has to be metal). Window defrost, I had a little 12v thing that sticks on your dash that others have passed with, but this guy needs vents all along the windshield not just one spot. Need a brake fail light showing either low fluid or low pressure. Since I’m using a remote reservoir I can’t do fluid level so I’m installing a brake differential switch. And when I installed my bump steer kit I forgot add a second jam nut on the outside by the spherical joint.

Everything is done but the brake switch, which I should have done today.

God damn, Adam, and I thought QC was picky! Maybe we have an overall tougher inspection but you got more picky details.
Also very surprised you need a full defrost on an open top, totally useless. Now I reckon the snow 1-2 weeks ago but that is not a reason for a defrost! I'm surprised you already fixed that one which seems to by far the most difficult to implement.

True you did some super major implementations on the car already so a defrost is not going to slow you down. loll

    Finally!

What a day! So I had all the items that caused me to fail addressed, appointment booked, left early just to be sure. Last “nice” day, probably for the year based on the forecast. At some point during the 20min drive I blew a -10 oil line. I didn’t notice it until I was pulling into the shop and seen that oil pressure was around 1bar. I was logging, but for some reason the file won’t work, so no idea how low the pressure got or for how long. So here I am, parked outside the shop, oil EVERYWHERE! With all the lines and coolers this thing takes around 10 Litres, dipstick was dry.

I used the push lock style lines, which I’d since learned that they’re not good for oil (despite being rated for it), especially on a rotary which runs really high oil pressure. Since I’d need to remove the entire body to replace the lines, I decided to just add some hose clamps to get me through the inspection process and do the lines over the winter. Well one of the lines on the driver’s front oil cooler let go and spewed everywhere, even came in the footwell!

Standing outside with the mechanic looking at all this mess it starts raining. So we push it into the shop and start talking about how I can get it home. I decide to hack up the cooler line that burst, disconnect both coolers and just install a loop on the thermostat to bypass them all together. He grabs me some tools and says “I’ll get started on the paperwork”. Wait, what? I’d totally ruled out passing an inspection and was just focused on damage control. So I installed my new line, added 3.5 Litres of oil and fired it up, good pressure. I cleaned up what oil I could and paid for my inspection. He was happy with all the fixes I added since the first inspection, and knew I’d fix the lines properly based off the rest of the build.

I was a mess on the drive home, such a mix of emotions. I’d just passed my inspection, but did I toast the engine? Rotaries rely on oil for 50% of their cooling, am I going to make it home without overheating the oil? Will another line or my new one fail? I was glued to my dash, pressure was staying good but the oil temp was climbing. I told myself if it hits 100c I’d pull over and see if it goes down idling or maybe shut it off for awhile, but it was getting really windy and bad weather was approaching fast! Just about home and getting off the highway I hit 100c, but it starting dropping as I slowed down for my exit and made it home! Holy sh!t that was stressful!

So it’s very bitter sweet. I’ve driven it over a 100km between the two inspections, but with winter setting in this evening and the need for new lines, I don’t think I’ll get to drive it with the plate on this year. Big plans over the winter, tearing the car down quite a bit to wrap it and install a bunch of upgrades. My motivation is high though, so I’m excited to get her looking and performing her best for the spring!

In a way I'm relieved to see other people get those frustrating issues I got, but in another way I feel so much the god damn frustration you went through!!!! That sucks so much... so much!

10L of oil?? Wow and I thought I had a lot with 8... loll

I get those emotions!!! I went through those many times and still go through the very very stressful emotions every single time I drive the car. I know exactly how it was when you drove back and it ain't a pleasant moment.

However now you can concentrate on fixing the issues, just like me. You and I really are in the same boat. lolll One suggestion, try to keep your motivation high, when it drops, you feel bad.

Very happy that inspector was kind enough to let it go and saw how you build and that there's no point of not fixing this properly, so he understood!!

And you know what, I got my plate on Oct 13th 2017! Almost exactly 2 years day for day! You and I are really the same. lolll

Keep it up and I will too!

Merry Christmas to you too bud! Love the Zonda, in fact the Zonda R is my poster dream car, just savage!

Haven’t worked on the car for a couple months. I told my wife that once I got my plate I’d finally do some renovations that I’d been putting off for years. All done those, and LOTS of parts lined up for 818!

First to show up is my Radium FCST (Fuel Cell Surge Tank) which I’m really excited about!! Two pumps in the surge tank and then the lift pump. I’ll only need the one pump for gasoline, but if I decide to push the limits and run e85 I’m all set. Also nice to know that there’s a spare pump just sitting there.

    F56291A5-79D7-4962-BAFE-0BA768AD76E7.jpg

I’m going to build a new tank out of aluminum, and I’m thinking of putting the pump assembly to the passenger side and making a access panel behind the seat so I only need to remove the one seat to access everything. The pickup would still be fairly close to the centre, and even with the surge tank I’ll install some sort of baffling. Also need to add a vent line to the filler as my first fill at the pump resulted in gas puking everywhere.

I’m not sure what I’m doing with the engine yet. I’ll do a compression test, cut open the oil filter and inspect the oil for any bearing material. I’ve got a lot to do, so ideally I’d prefer to postpone a rebuild until next winter.

Filmed this last spring, along with more content throughout the summer that I just never go around to editing. Admittedly it’s a bit winded, but it’s hard to make the final touches and the teething of a new build interesting. This one is a little rotary premix 101, tuning idle, compression testing, cooling system whoas and when it’s finally time to go for a drive I realize I don’t have reverse. Doh!

So excited to get this installed! Unbelievably short crisp shifts and fully adjustable. It’s the K-Tuned Rev2 Street billet shifter. Found some cables locally for $60cad! They’re not perfect as the bulkhead threads to cable end is longer, but for the price and availability I couldn’t pass them up and I’ll make them work. Cables are 84”, which is about 6” longer than I needed but my routing now incorporates a sweeping “S” that shouldn’t affect the feel of the shifting much.

    8F23AB8B-559E-46D8-B7C0-768FC675D72C.jpg

The side to side motion needed to be reversed which I was able to accomplish by rotating the pivot arm mounting and making a new bulkhead mount. Once I have the Blast Plates from Moore(group buy on hold due to Covid-19) I’ll remake both bulkhead mounts so I didn’t get fancy with the temporary one.

Next up is a new fuel tank!

I think you have me sold on one, I'm positive it will work really well with my mechanical linkage. As soon i recover from the COVID-19 financial fallout I'll pick one up.

I made a to-do list. Who thinks I'll be driving my car this summer? And who thinks I'd prefer to work on it and will just tear it apart every time its done? ( I swear it isn't the case, lol)

That to-do list reminds me of my few lists I made from time to time... still got one open!

I think you will be driving the car every other day this summer AND taking it apart the other every other days! How 'bout that...

The Quick Latches are a pain in the beeep cuz you're not using springs. I have 20lbs springs on every quick latch and it works superb, it pushes the panel up every time I press on the latch.

Curiously I cannot find the springs anymore on their website...

Thanks frank but I’ve moved on from them. I have 6, so I’m sure I’ll try them again on another project someday and look for springs then.

Just an FYI. The GTC-300 is a twisted element wing. The basic rationale for this style of wing is that its designed to work with a fastback style rear window (think Ferrari, the 818C, etc.) by optimizing it's angle of attack (AOA) across the wing's span. Airflow along the sides of the car is more or less level with the road. However the airflow coming over the roof and down the sloping rear glass approaches at a steeper angle. So in this application the wing "sees" the air coming at it from different angles, thus making for different AOA across the span. Solution: twist the element to accommodate for that condition. Setting the tips at 0AOA is likely to produce the same AOA in the middle when the air is flowing down the rear glass (now flowing "straight on" towards the upturned middle section).

Without a fastback profile, I would focus on the middle AOA. That has the greatest span, so this will contribute more to the wing's performance. Yes, that means the tips will be at a heavy AOA, but that's just life with a twisted element wing. Test - test - test.

    Best,

    Thanks for the advice man!

The plan is to add some form of roof in the near future. This was the wing FFR offered with the 818R back when the car first came out. Obviously it was the wrong wing for that car, especially with no windshield. They did do testing with it and if I recall correctly they recommended the centre of the element be set to 0* which makes the sides 15*. That was with the race splitter and diffuser which I also have. So that’s where I’m going to start. Once I’m able to get on track I’ll play with increasing the angle after I’ve gotten aquatinted with the car and track. Lots of testing in my future!

Thanks for posting that Frank. I just bought a bunch of those QuickLatches and felt my stomach drop when I heard the comments about them. Your solution makes sense and looks very straight-forward to implement.

I can provide more pix on my thread if you need, but since I could not find the springs on Quik-Latch's website, I searched and found them elsewhere: https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Quik-...it,139590.html

Maybe either get them from elsewhere or ask Quik-Latch if they still source those...

Never failed on me, once you adjust the latches properly, angle, height, those springs work like a charm. And god knows how many times I pushed on my latches to remove my deck lids and open up my hood.

Lemme know your feedback once you install them. Your thread, my thread... I think Adam might be jealous he removed his too quickly.

Speedway Motorsports was a good place when I ordered the bumpsteer kit, for which I ordered double of everything and sent half to Adam. I can't recall if you installed that bumpsteer kit on your extreme build, Adam?

Adam you bast...! You thought you'd get away without us knowing? We all know you are hiding in your garage to replace your apex seals with "never-break" seals and this new engine "while you're at it":

Haha Frank, no engine builds going on here. Just working on making her pretty and tinkering with my RX8 as I learn to drift. I did install the bumpsteer kit, made a video about it, and gave you credit in the video. Obviously someone isn’t watching my video's, lol.

    Here’s a little teaser...
