    Master Shutoff Switch Location

Looking for thoughts on where to locate the master shutoff switch. I ordered the iWire harness, but that locates the switch on a center console panel which isn't easily accessible from the exterior in a crash.

    Per SCCA GCR:

    The standard locations shall be
    as follows:
    A. Formula and Sports Racing Cars–In proximity to the right-hand
member of the roll bar, but in a location so that it cannot be operated
accidentally. It can be mounted on a bracket welded to the
inside of the upright member or mounted so that the operating lever
or knob is outside of the body panel immediately in-board of the
upright member. This is the standard location on Formula cars built
to the Constructor’s Association requirements for Formula 1.

    B. Closed Sports Racing Cars, Production Cars, Improved Touring and
GT Cars–In front of the windshield on either the cowl or on top of
the fender, but close enough to the windshield to be accessible
if the car is overturned. Alternatively, it may be mounted below
the center of the rear window or on a bracket welded, clamped
or bolted to the roll cage or dash, easily accessible through the
open window. (Drilling of holes in roll cage to attach the bracket is
    prohibited.)

    C. Open Production, GT, and Improved Touring Cars–May exercise a
    choice among the above locations.
    Our regional race organization (ICSCC):

    D. Circuit Breakers. All cars shall be equipped with a functional master
circuit breaker (master switch) which cuts all electrical circuits except
fire extinguishing and life support systems. It shall be located so as to
be both easily visible and easily accessible from the exterior of the car
if the car were overturned. Master electrical switches shall only have
one motion to turn off (i.e. turn left but not push and turn left to turn
switch off). The off position shall be clearly indicated at the switch
    location.
SCCA is more specific. cowl, fender, rollbar? Any recommendations?

It's simple. Just buy another electrical pull cable and mount it on either corner of the dash. You then just drill a small hole in the master switch and run cable through it. I did this on my 818R with my IWire harness.

Www.rennline.com has universal electrical pull cables.

Warning- pictures may be huge- I'm working on the road. I can't resize from iPad.

    Thanks- Chad

Mine are (will be) wired in series, so I have one near dash area for me and one on passenger side for corner workers, just tell Brian that you want to add a second kill switch so he makes the alternator wire long enough and then you can just add a jumper between them. So like Chad I have second kill switch and second fire pull on passenger side for corner workers.

I will be running ICSCC with the 818R this up and coming season.

Thanks, guys. I'll give Brian a call.

BTW, Tony: I may have bumped into you at pacific or bremerton. Ran SCCA track trials for awhile in a silver 04 STI (now the donor). I usually went over to check out the FFR spec racers. I am up in the Bothell area and just started on my 818R build. Good to know there is a fellow builder nearby.

Jeff, we will have to get together, there is another R build starting near us also, the folks from Momentary Racing are building an R for enduro racing (like 25hrs of Thunderhill) so they have been gathering parts and planning. So what are your build plans? Race plans ?w

I am using my old 2004 STI as the donor, so the 2.5 turbo motor and the six-speed are going in. I already ran into an issue with converting the six-speed. FFR's 2WD adapter doesn't work for 2004 STI. I posted that in another thread.

Here is a list of the other highlights of the planned build:

    • 5x114 hubs. I had upgraded my STI to 5x114 a few years back, so I'll need to deal with those issues although it looks like there are some great tips here in the forums.
    • Using the Brembos from my STI.
    • VCP's Ktuned Shifter. Just ordered this. I was pre-installing the FFR plastic shifter and decided it was poor design.
    • Team Dynamics 17x8,17x9 5x114. Ordered these and should get them by the end of March. Stolen from Chad's thread.
    • 818R iWire Harness ordered. I got in line for an April completion. Wired for AIM MXL2.
    • Chassis mount the wing. Probably going to steal Chad's design, too.
    • Rivnut panels as much as I can.

I am kind of making this stuff as I go and getting great ideas from the forums.

I ordered my frame unpainted. Right now, I am pre-drilling, welding, etc. as much as I can prior to sending off to powdercoat. Posting updates on my website.

As far as racing, I haven't really thought too much about the classes. I figure I'll build it and wherever I'll end up is good for me.

I am just about ready to tackle the wing mount-would appreciate any help I could get. Also tranny protection!

    Thanks, Ray
