Sort of Newbie Just Saying Hi

My wife said the magic words to me the other day....Honey, why don't you build a car? My reply was...HUH??

Well I had seen Speedmakers segment with FFR on it a month or so ago, so I went to their website and when I realized they did the 65 coupe I was enthralled.

I have never taken on a project of this magnitiude, at least with cars. I have built most parts of a house. I used to race Porsches and did my own brakes, but thats about it. Placed an air dam and front oil cooler.

So...any advice to someone who is possibly about to take the plunge would be appreciated.

    A couple questions:

    1) What does a guy do if he gets stuck? How steep is the learning curve?

    2) What does it take to make these cars street legal?

    3) What is likely resale on thse cars?

    4) Am I crazy? Should I just check myself into a facility right now? Or will I be sure to need the facility later?

    1. Around here there is no such thing as getting stuck, it's more like, "What did you guys do with my wallet, and I'm 50% over budget"! There is enough help here to get you past anything. Most of us have, "Been there done that", so we'll be here to support you when you do hit a problem area.

    2. Just build the car as designed, and it's street legal, you might have to have exhaust shields, but nothing major.

    3. Not as much as you put into it, just like any other car you buy off the lot.

    4. Yes! But you have company, when you order your Coupe, this will be provided as a restraint against you hurting yourself or others.

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Hank pretty much covers it. You will find lots of help here and plenty of pictures are on different sites that can be found linked to guys builds.

The coupe does take some dedication but there have been many built by guys with your kind of experaince.
And what's wrong with crazy! :-)

Do like I just did. Order a build manual (GTM is my insanity) and check out the detailed instructions....700+ pages for mine. Read through it and see if you are up for the challenge. A small price to pay I think before a big leap.
