Upgraded side mirror?
After driving my MK4 for 3 seasons in gelcoat, it's finally going in for paint this fall. One of the things i would like to do is upgrade the side mirror. I like the look of the bullet mirror, and want to stay with that style, not windshield mounted mirrors. Any suggestions? Is the one that finish line sells the same as the FFR, or better? Thanks!!

I also prefer the look for the bullet mirror, but the visibility w/ the flat stock mirror is limited. I did a swap with a convex blind spot mirror. The main issue I ran into was that the stock mirror is 3.5" and all the convex mirrors I could find are 3.75".
I ended up buying a circular glass cutter from amazon for like $10 and ended up cutting my own mirror from the 3.75" one. Go ahead and buy a few of the blindspot mirrors while you're at it. I went through 3 before I was happy with the results (put too much pressure on one and cracked it, cut one too small, etc). You'll need to pry the metal backing off the convex mirrors as well.20210529_120719.jpg20210529_120707.jpg20210529_120735.jpg

Pegasus Auto Racing sells Genuine Talbot Berlin Mirrors.
They come in two sizes and can be purchased with Flat or Convex mirror types.
Yes, they are a bit expensive, but what's a couple of extra dollars spent between friends.

They also have an assortment of other styles which may or may not work for you.

I did the convex glass on both sides of the car. Local glass guy, 40 bucks.

He used a passenger side replacement glass for 2015 Ram 1500. Cut both out of that one piece

Did you just double side tape them over the existing glass?

If you cut correctly, the plastic bezel will hold it in place without double sided tape. I removed the original mirror, but could theoretically have it under the convex mirror.

It only costs a little bit more to go First Class!
Okay, maybe a lot more, but you've got to admit that they are nice.
Not liking the original style mirror, I went with a Porsche 356 Aero Style from Sierra Madre instead.
They come in flat and Convex types and are quite nice for a lot less money, but would look out of place on Comp Style MK-4.

I think the person advising these should pay for them.

I broke down and shelled out for two this spring. Here is what prompted me to make the investment. While driving this winter I went to change lanes and didn’t see a guy who pulled out from behind to pass. No collision, but it scared the crap out of me as I had checked the very poor mirror that came with the kit before pulling out and never saw the guy. Afterwards, I got to thinking about what could have happened and realized that even if the insurance would have paid out, the cost of the deductible was more than what 2 of the mirrors would cost. I picked up the phone and called Pegasus the next day.
While I realize these are stupid expensive, and that there are cheaper solutions out there, they do an excellent job and are of very high quality. I interact with them every time I get into the car, and for me, knowing that their performance is at the same level as the rest of the build makes me happy.
Certainly not for everyone; but I’m glad I shelled out the cash.
Cheers,
Jeff

And that why using the body mount position is a BAD idea. Mount them higher on the windshield frame and you can always see the car in the next lane. The closer the mirror is to you, the larger the area you can see, mounted on the body it's just too far away to have a good view.

Personally I’m not a fan of the mirrors on the windshield frame. Convex lens solved the problem quite nicely though. To each their own…

I just turn my head and look before i change lanes or back up. Would never depend on just a mirror
