Has anyone built a 33 with a legal cage?
There are several challenges to building a "legal cage" in a 33HR but you also need to define which sanctioning body you want to pass inspection on. 33(r) <> race only?
I'll talk about the challenges I saw for NHRA approval for a hardtop car which I decided not to attempt passing for a lot of reasons. The first and hardest part was the
design of down bars in the back to meet the 6 point minimum. The shape of the hardtop and trunk on the 33 would require the rear downbars to exit/pass through
the back of the top and re-enter through the body into the trunk to land on the frame. The second challenge is the front hoop location behind the A pillars
being way behind the firewall and the need for that hoop to pass through the dash or chop up a lot of dash to avoid that. Because of the suicide doors on
the 33 that front hoop would drop down to the chassis where you swing in your feet to get in. The third challenge is that the chop top puts most of the
horizontal bars close to your head. Add to that the door bars and even with swing out bars you have made a car that is already difficult to get in even harder and not
very practical for a street rod which is what I am building. My 33HR has a 4 point cage and a driveshaft hoop that pass muster for my peace of mind but not NHRA legal.
Mathew P. has built a 33 with a lot more robust cage in his and road races it in his region but I don't recall the sanctioning body involved. I think there are 2 or 3 other
caged 33's besides mine but I don't recall their forum names at the moment. HTH

Here's a link to Marrhew P's build thread, the roll cage starts at post 22.

Guys thanks for the information. I am in the very early planning stages. This detail will help a lot. My interest include road racing as well. When I get to a final design, I will be sure to post the build for feedback
Thanks
