    Cable Shifter Alternatives

    I have found random references to alternative shifters but not much in the way of detail.
    Can anyone share their experiences along with part descriptions/numbers for cable shifters other than the Brandwood offering?
    I see that some have used a Toyota unit but what cables are being used?
    How does the Toyota unit perform/feel?
    A Buddy of mine has purchased a complete GTM and is looking to change out the original FF5 rod and linkage on his G50 5 speed and is not a forum member so I am helping him out.
    I appreciate any feedback.

    The Toyota part has a long shift throw from the factory. This is easily fixed either cutting down the shift rod by 1 inch or purchasing a short shift kit for about 100 bucks.

    Cables in varying lengths are available from all the hot rod dealers. (Summit, Speedway motors)

    Good shift feel is very dependent on removing any slop from the system. I was able to use the Toyota shifter, factory five provided cables and the Mendiola and get very good shifter feel. Sure it didn't have that special mechanical feel on the best shifters available today (Porsche and Audi), but it was far better then the average rubbery feel of most production cars.

    Since we are building a custom solution the biggest variable is the installation. I don't have experience with other options, however I was happy with the modified Toyota based setup

    This is the company I use for cables. I've been using them for over 20 years. They build you whatever you need at a reasonable price with high quality components.

    That said, cables will always change over time, so I prefer the solid metal shaft setup. It is harder to build and initially adjust, but holds adjustment better.
