Is this the correct shifter at the rear location on a TKO tranny?

    Hi Guys,

I want my roadster to have the more vintage look to the interior. I love the look of the old shifters that bent forward. Is this the correct shifter to fulfill the look in an FFR and with a TKO transmission?

    http://www.**********accessories.com...le-427-t5.aspx

Also, can anyone tell me the shift pattern of a TKO? What did the original shift knobs look like?

    Thanks!

Its the one I am using.

    TKO-600

    1 3 5
    2 4 R

The holes in the shifter are slightly smaller that the trans stub. I just used locking bolts that would fit the shifter 5K miles & 18 months with no issues.

FFR included a bent shifter with the kit. Picture is a rear mount on a TKO 500. 20150812_142156.jpg
Are you concerned about having a T-handle for the reverse lock-out? If yes the FFR version won't accomplish your goal.

Yeah, I was wanting the t handle look. The FFR shifter looks pretty good though.

What knob are you guys using? Is it one that came with the kit?

    What kind of bolts?

I just drilled out the holes in the shifter...The ********** version is definitely closer to the original than the FFR Supplied one with the bend and simulated lockout...It also seems to be positioned better.

This is the stock shifter that came with my Mk3 kit in the stock rear position of a T-5 transmission.

The shift ball is from Mike Everson. It works fine once you get used to the slight up-down motion of shifting. No big deal at all.

This is the ********** shifter that I've used in my last two builds. Both have been in the rear position of a TKO600, but with the plate turned around to the front. For me, it's the perfect setup and looks somewhat authentic. The angle over is nice, and the motion is mostly front to back. I also drilled out the holes to match the bolts in the TKO shifter. The shift ball is a GM Original Parts Group APK2190 from Summit. Found it kind of by accident and like it alot. It's chrome plated, price is right, has a nice feel.

I use that shifter handle with my TKO and quite like it. I tried the new stock FFR handle but it mounts too low on the TKO and I found the rubber boot would pull the trans out of 3rd gear over small bumps. The ********** handle solved that problem since it comes pretty much straight up from the shifter stub shaft and then bends which does not put any weird pressure on the shifter boot. I had to drill out the handle for the TKO's larger bolts which are 3/8" by 7/8" by 24. The stub shaft is threaded so you can just use a bit of Loctite on the threads and attach the handle directly to the shifter stub shaft. Scott

Edward / Johnny - I have the ********** shifter as well and really want to use it. To confirm, you used the rear setting on the TKO 600 but flipped the plate around? Also, what side of the stub shaft did you mount it on passenger side or driver side? Thanks.

In both cases, whatever works best for your setup. I've installed that shifter in a TKO build twice. With a SBF, worked best with the rear plate flipped around. With a Coyote, worked best with the plate in the rear position. Makes sense. The Coyote is a bit shorter than a SBF. In both cases, I put the shifter on the passenger side of the mount. That put the shift ball right where it was most comfortable for me. But it can go on either side. Try both and see what you you like.

Thanks Edward - I will see what fits but I really liked the look of your placement. Where did you get the leather shifter boot? Is that the factory five stock one?

I bought a leather boot for an Audi TT and it fits perfectly. Less than $20 on eBay if I recall.

Factory Five doesn't supply a leather style boot for the shifter. Just the rubber ring thing. I've used the shifter boot from Mike Everson on three builds, including what's pictured here. It's not real leather, but a nice piece. http://www.replicaparts.com/shift%20boot%20page.htm

Thanks Edward. Just ordered one from mike - like it better than the rubber boot.
