Why not... out on Vets day.... got another lap around the neighborhood to shake out the car... fixed the gear indicator.. sealed up the cockpit and made some runs on the highway... this time with the GoPro so much safer this way.
anyway... nothing crazy... but proves that this is not just a show car... but drives nice down the road. Still haven't leaned on it too hard in the corners, braking or acceleration... all pulls were no MORE than 1/2 throttle. What a great day!!! thanks to FFR for building this kit.... should be some fun times ahead!!!!!
here is some real in town driving and me even stalling it out...lol .... low on gas I think...

Great videos Erik!
Wonderful job on the build!
I just got my coupe this past thursday.
If you had to guess how many hours you have in that build what do you think. I know yours is far from a routine build and your far from a run of the mill builder.
Wayne Presley www.verycoolparts.com
Xterminator 705 RWHP supercharged 4.6 DOHC with twin turbos
lol....I started really working on the car in Jan... finished it Aug.... I really only worked on it on the weekends... and I did an average of 7hours a day on sat and sunday.
The turbo and exhaust took a solid month. Making the cyclic stick work and not look or feel bad took a few weekends. Also staying with the MT82 transmission created challenges as well....Also being a Beta guy I had to wait or make some of the parts (that goes with the deal)... I also had a small issue with the original engine... I you don't color outside the lines I think the hardest part for me was getting the body and nose to line up so it looked right....other than that..it wasn't really that bad...
how many total hours...? I really depends on the person... so not sure anything I say will be accurate... aim for 500hrs...I do the builds in 4-8 months with my method of execution..I don't look at the hours. In the end it isn't a race and if it takes you 1000 hrs to have something you like and is SAFE then spend the time that needs to spent.... don't worry how ling it takes... eventually all the boxes get emptied !! you will have set backs... work on something else and come back to that part.
any lastly... use the forum! the instructions are a great place to start... but the forum is key.
good luck !

No time wasted... build it fast.... enjoy it even faster! (oil light is on cause the car is NOT running!)
Took it out to the Base and ran it out in the test area... up to 120 --- added another 200 lbs in the passenger seat.. this finally allowed FULL throttle in 3rd gear following a good burnout on the line lock... the car IS a rocket.
Equally impressive is that I can cruise through the school zone in 6th gear @ 25 mph....The alignment is spot on... able to leave my hands off the steering wheel (hands kept close obviously ) for over a 1/4 mile and the car stays in the lane.
I am exhausted from the excitement and feeling of acceleration ... need a bit to let it all sink in...
Stopped by work to show the car off.... could not leave... after 2 hours of people rolling in to look at it ... I had to get home....
removed the 200 lbs from the passenger seat... tried to apply full power in 3rd gear again...... NOPE. ... back to half throttle driving And it was low 70's today as well.... thought that might have helped.... nope!
more reports to follow.... but this is the smoothest driving car FFR has put out! The combination of the stiff chassis and the modern drivetrain is second to none... a breeze and a pleasure to drive!!!

Glad you are finally able to enjoy that beautiful ride. How did it feel at 120? Nose getting light or just normal feel? Seems like the Gen 3 and Coyote motor are a great match.

Well... got the first 100 miles in and 1 car show... which was more like a car gathering than anything else...
as all things go, had to address some "Erik design" issues....
normal rattles of things that happen which have all been addressed... mostly where the body was rubbing on places or where I thought the door or rear hatch was ok... either it wasn't or it settled... in any case those are fixed...
2 major issues came up... one was the "aircraft style" gas cap. I couldn't find an interface that would fit to the cap that would neck it down to the filler tube... the cap was designed to sit on a square flat box.... with anything over 1/2 tank of gas in a sharp left turn you could smell gas... meaning a leak... it was leaking at the piece I made (not perfectly flat).... I ended up figuring out a way to use the OEM mustang cap under the aircraft cap... solved 2 problems... no leaks and I can fill at full handle speed and the kick back works great! ----- and no more gas smell.
The other thing that has been an issue is an oil smell at WOT... the turbos as you know in a very low location and I was HOPING that a "slight" slope was all that was needed... seems like that worked fine on the dyno since there were no other forces on the drain...In real life conditions... the car pulls VERY HARD as you can imagine. My drain lines went forward and tee'd in the front of the oil pan... so under "spirited driving" where either forces or oil pressure increased seemed like the drains were not able to keep up... not full smoke show but definitely smelly. .... After some conversation with Wayne and some other research, seems like I needed a oil sump pump to suck/push the oil into the oil pan... I installed it yesterday and it seems to have made a huge difference! I mounted next to the tranny so the oil flows backwards toward the rear of the car and then gets pumped to the front of the oil pan... the hose clamps will get exchanged for a proper hose length... ran out of -10 (of course) but need to find out if the extra part ($$$) was worth the payoff... seems so..... Still have a "slight" oil smell but I am hoping that is either
1. residual oil from in the pipes
or
2. The open breathers sitting at the rear of the engine (I plan or running those out the back next)
All in all seems like things are headed in the right direction and I am slowly expanding the distance from home and gaining confidence in the car's performance.... which is pretty much AWESOME... the power is nuts obviously... but the ease that it is delivered and the drivability of the tune is pretty amazing... the car also drives, handling wise.... extremely well... no complaints at all!! Might have to keep this one a while...lol

Been driving the car as much as late winter and early spring approaches.... about 400 miles on the clock now... the tune is settling in nicely in the part throttle cruise and idle... had a slight surge tonight... yes... the Blackhawk Coupe now owns the night...Just when I thought the day couldn't get any better.... first night drive in the car , to pick up my daughter at school and enjoy the drive home the two of us! - it was nice ride... she had fun and we laughing after I applied 1/2 throttle boost blasts... funny girl... I had the same reaction the first time I did that in the car too.... great times.... thanks to Factory Five!!! and thanks to my daughter for the memories!! great night!

A few things to post today...
Took the Coupe to the local TVR/TAC SCCA event today... funny the place kinda shutdown when I drove in... like SEMA all over again... ..1000 questions....
Anyway... Checked tire pressures, fluids and once over... walked the track.. then we were off...
The first pass ever , the car was pretty loose... I had to go to 400# springs in the rear earlier this year due the amount of squat I get under power when the car hooks... I set the sway bar to full soft and thought that it would be good... nope... Just disconnected one end and boy did that make a difference... holy cow does this thing ride... with the bar I was at 75 secs... without the bar after only 4 runs ever in the car I was done to 68 secs... and getting faster... I quit for the day cause I learned what I wanted to learn on how to drive the car near or at its limits (at times)... and my back started to hurt... so ... good first venture.. need to give it a good inspection now that I beat the crap out of it.
here are some pics.. my GoPro failed me .. sorry ..
in addition to this I got my side windows in.... FOr you all thinking about getting them.... make sure you put the window in BEFORE you mount the door release!!!
the down side of being the Beta guy - the upside is I got to use my new welder !!!
after the fix was executed

I am not surprised the car handled better with the sway bar disconnected. Nice job for the first time out with the car.
Thanks.. I was getting faster... the car worked really well...the sound was incredible. The RIVAL tires work great as well.. tons of grip... my roadster never handled this good... I think between the IRS and the super stiff chassis design just all works. Even the turbos with the tune allow excellent control of car... I think I will end up just leaving the one link for the rear bar in the door and leave it with one end connected.

Erik,
I've followed your build, always impressed. An excellent performance, congrats.
Can you explain the handling changes once you disconnected the sway bar?
Wallace18, why would you expect it to handle better?
I'm curious and long ways from completion but trying to learn.
Jim
Sway bars IMO work best with soft springs. Stiff springs and sway bars are usually overkill. I found this out when I raced in IMSA in 1984-86. JM2CW.
Just ordered my side windows. Looks like my door handle will be similar to yours, at least mine is not painted yet so moving them will not be as big a deal.
thanks for the pictures,

Erik-
I have enjoyed all the updates since completion! I had to chuckle at one of your comments though. You said that at one of the stops, the car was "well received." No offense, but if that car ever gets anything less than an outpouring of admiration and respect, they just don't get cars, or craftsmanship, or attention to detail, and ...! Well, you get the idea.
I hope to see your ride in person someday, but will enjoy your updates in the meantime!

Steve

Factory Five supplied some Beta Quarter windows...while somewhat functional... the seal at the "B-pillar" looked like it might be hard (for me) to work well... also the installation requires you to screw in the window... the Russ Thompson solution would not work because of the proximity of the roll bar does not lend itself to allow the window to be hinged...The last few weeks I enjoyed the side windows without the quarters installed.. but for the cooler mornings or if it rains... water would be hitting me right in the ear...
what I ended up with, is that use the proximity of the roll bar to my advantage and made a "slide in" quarter window - once all the hardware is installed - NO TOOLS are required to put the window in or take it out.... it simply gets pinched between the body and roll bar and then at the back I made a small clip that rotates around to pinch the back of the window seal. On the "b-pillar" side I added a small 90* aluminum piece and put some bulb seal on it and it seals it all off... not air tight... but good enough... looks pretty good too! I just like that I can customize the air into the cockpit as need - allowing me to run the windows more often without potentially getting heated out of the car on the warmer days.
