    FFR's own 818R

It's a really good day when Dave Smith call you up and asks you to prep their 818 and take it to the Grassroots Motorsports Magazine Ultimate Track Car Challenge. Their R&D department is swamped with the SnapOn coupe build, wind tunnel testing and a few other secret projects. The car arrive with an unpainted body and the major components mounted to a new frame. I pulled the body and took the panels to my painter for the paint and body work. While the painter was working his magic I set out on going through the chassis, putting a race alignment on it, wiring the car, putting on the dyno and tuning it. I am 98% done and will have a test day at the track next week and then off to VIR on My 19 for the UTCC!

So glad this has happened. The 818 deserves this track attention IMO. It looks great. The Goal is to get under 2 min a lap...Correct.

Good testing at Roebling. I will see you at VIR, bringing my car on the trailer, can't get it off! I will check in the end of Apr to find out the schedule and how to get in. Are you staying for the weekend NASA event, or heading home after the Challenge?

Do you have any idea who else is coming from FFR? Dave? Others? Is FFR going to tell everyone what is going on with this?

Good for all of us that you are doing this. Thanks, BC

Good stuff! We'd all love some pics of what's under that pretty body, and maybe you're alignment specs.

Wayne, is the car running Yokohama's or Hoosier's? Red Koni's or the double adjust Koni's, that is a impressive amount of spring, something else to try.

The car sure looks the part and I like the FMIC too, lots of trick stuff.

Using the 818R red single adjustable Koni's and it has Yokohama slicks. I'm going to run Hoosier at the event.

Looks great! Who makes the vent panel for the front wheel wells (the one in the front of the doors)?
Also were the rear side vent ducts 3d printed. Kind of looks like it in the pics.

All of the carbon on the car was hand laid out of a mold. The nose was vacuum bagged and is amazingly light. The headlight covers are the FFR supplied plexi wrapped in carbon vinyl film.

FFR's 818R with oils, fluids and no gas 1956 lbs, exactly 60/40 weight R/R distribution. R/L distribution is 50.2/49.8 with me in it.

When I look at the roll bar I have to think that a fairing would significantly reduce drag and provide cleaner flow to the wing. Round bars are terribly draggy. I'd love to see a top speed comparison on the same day without and with a fairing.

Are you keeping the power steering powered up? If so , thoughts on how it drives?

Feed back on the feel with Power Steering will be interesting. I don't find the car hard to steer and has good road feel with the depowered rack with the BFG R1S race tires I am running. I believe Wayne has driven the FFR car without PS so he will have a good comparison.

I had someone who is very familiar with aerodynamics mention the same thing when looking at the 818 recently. I had a mention of this in my build thread. I'm definitely doing this to smooth out the air going to my wing, even on my S.

This pretty sums up the reason:

    From: http://www.buildyourownracecar.com/r...-and-design/4/

    From: http://www.formula1-dictionary.net/drag.html

Sorry for the threadjack Wayne! It would be great if you and Dave could do a little aero testing on this though.

Great pics and short but sweet report!

You must have 20' ramps to get it on /off the trailer!

Done testing ran a 1:16.7 at Roebling and the car ran perfectly. Nice balance, hot tire pressure of 27, water temp of 194, needs .25-.40 more camber in the left rear stupid fast down the front straight.
