Rear End Gear Oil Fill

I can't find any instructions that came with my rear end from F5R, but I know I need to fill it up with gear oil. Do I need to get a new gasket when I add the oil or can I reuse what is on there now. How much do I torque the bolts on the differential cover?

No need to remove the rear cover. There is a fill port on the forward passenger side of the housing. If you do pull the cover, the gasket will likely be trash. Just clean off the material from both the housing and cover and use RTV to make a leak-free gasket.

Edit: I'm assuming you have a Moser 8.8 if you bought it from FF.

Do you have factory style limited slip? If so, you need a bottle of friction modifier also.

As papa said, use the plug. It's the only way to measure. Set it up with the close to correct pinion angle, pull plug and fill it. Takes about 2 3/4 bottle if I remember right. A piece of tubing helps. Put the modifier in first then the oil. Full till it's at the threads of the plug. A little coming out is ok. Clean up mess and put in plug. Then open another beer.

Yes Moser 8.8 from FF. The only thing is see that might be a fill hole has a square plug. I am guessing that must be it.

Should look like this. 1/2" drive square should plug right into it. It's just a regular pipe thread plug. Teflon tape or hoop it when you reinstall it.

Can you overfill a rear? Just curious since I've no experience with solid rears and I simply added the documented amount (that I found online, don't remember what it was now), while the cover was off and facing up. I didn't use the plug at all..

You can overfill it and cause the oil to froth, as I understand. Would also cause problems at the end seals and maybe pinion seal. But if you added the documented amount, it should be fine.

I used a 3/8 ratched extension and took out the plug added the 1.875 quarts of gear oil plus the 4oz friction modifier as described in the manual. Put some teflon tape on the plug and screwed it back in. Pretty easy and quick.

The Moser rear takes 3 liters of synthetic 75W90 gear lube. No friction modifier. It should have come with instructions. I just installed one in the 33 I am building.

The setup I received is the FFR88355-3 - 8.8. It has the Ford Trac-Loc with clutches and requires a friction modifier. https://www.carid.com/images/ford-pe...4204-f318c.jpg

If you put a full three quarts in the rear it will most likely be overfilled and will make the rear end build pressure. I would stick to what factory five said around the 2 quart range.

I see only the one plug - assuming to fill (even though the manual said to remove rear cover). While filling, I see a few mentioned the correct PINION angle - what is that - wouldn't I just keep the drive shaft connector parallel with the ground? Also where can I find the friction modifier - is this a common AutoZone type product?

I did question the same on another post, but found this while searching.
