    Driver's Side Footbox Question

See the picture below. The flap that makes up part of the footbox floor sheet metal should be on the inside next to the frame tube not like it's shown in the picture, right???

    Thanks. Joel

    Joel,

I fitted mine with the side wall over the top of the floor. I don't know what the prevailing advice will be, but I wanted to eliminate or reduce any opportunities for water to find its way into the foot box.

On the Mk4 Roadster that flap goes on the inside. Opposite of what's pictured. I suspect the 289 is the same.

Not Trying to "High Jack" this thread...but have a question dealing with both driver's and passenger side foot box areas ? Have Hot Air from the engine compt. channeling between the body and foot box into the cockpit....while you folks are working in this general area is there aluminum panels which fit into these areas to prevent this? I purchased this car pretty much complete and currently sorting . Any information from forum builds goes a long way .IMG_0990 (2).JPG

I think the typical mod for that problem is to use a pool noodle between the footbox sheet metal and the body.

No aluminum panels. The problem is the curved body next to the straight sides of the footboxes. Without sealing those locations, you will get a blast of hot air into the cockpit from both sides. Obviously which you're finding out. The kit comes with expandable foam sealing tape, and the instructions show using this material on the aluminum panels just in front of the door hinges right before installing the body. The idea is for it to expand and fill the area. Some find it doesn't work too well. Some just miss the step. Others prefer something different.

There have been multiple solutions posted, including pool noodles. I've used the expanding tape (works OK), a similar replacement from McMaster-Carr (also works OK), and also added foam weatherstripping after the fact (#8674). I found the air conditioning foam like Jeff describes in this post to work the best. Ideally put on while installing the body. But it can be pushed into place with the body already installed.
